About this file

This is a USDA Forest Service Cone and Seed Handling Checklist (Form R1-2470-22) used to document the collection, processing, and testing of tree seed and cone lots throughout their lifecycle from field collection to nursery processing.

The checklist is divided into four primary sections. Section A, completed at the collection station, captures seed code information including collection date, species, region/forest/district codes, seed zone, breeding zone, elevation data, habitat type, and program level (ranging from bulk collections to seed orchards and breeding orchards). It documents the geographic location to quarter-section accuracy with latitude/longitude coordinates in decimal format (NAD83 datum), the collector and checker names, and grouping numbers for multi-container lots. Section A also records transportation details, including container type, bushel count, shipment date, transportation method (contract or force account), insect damage presence, interim storage type, and cone condition upon shipment (moisture and mold levels). Section B, completed by the nursery, documents seed extraction information, the complete seed processing workflow (including receive and rack, drying, steam treatment, extraction, scalping, dewinging, sizing, cleaning, and testing activities with dates and units), seed activity metrics (original storage amounts and yield calculations), and comprehensive seed testing results including germination percentages, purity, and moisture content across unstratified, stratified, and tetrazolium testing protocols. Section C provides nursery assessment remarks evaluating section completeness, cone quality acceptability, handling conditions, cone morphology, maturity status, tag accuracy, packaging adequacy, debris presence, lot flagging requirements, and overall handbook compliance. Section D allows for additional comments. The form includes detailed instructions for completing each field, with specific coding requirements for collection methods, collection personnel types, seed bank classifications, program levels, and genetic base designations.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONE AND SEED HANDLING CHECKLIST

(This is a guide - See Handbook sections 430 and 440 for complete detail)

Attachment #6- Cone & Seed Handling Checklist

Seed Lot:

• Region 1 field units leave blank, this field is completed by Coeur d’Alene Nursery.

• Region 2 field units complete 12-digit seed lot identification code following Section 412.

• Region 3 and Region 4 field units complete 10-digit seed lot identification code following Section 413.

Partial Shipment:

Check box if the Forest or District plans to ship more cones of the same lot at a later date

- otherwise leave blank.

Alert Special Process (Red Tag):

Check box if the Forest plans to sow the seed within the year (same winter for container or the following spring for container or bareroot) so these cones will be processed first.

All western white pine cone collections in Region 1 are to be red-tagged.

Collection Date:

Enter month, date, and year of collection. Example 09/05/2016.

Species Code and Common Name:

These alpha characters shall match with the four or seven-character plant code in the USDA NRCS PLANTS code (http://plants.usda.gov/java/ ). Example: PIPOS – Ponderosa pine var. scopulorum.

Region/Forest/District code, Forest Name, District Name:

Enter the numeric codes. Also write the National Forest and District name. Example:

011605, Lolo NF, Plains District.

Seed Zone:

For species that have seed zones designated on maps, record the characters that identify the zone where the seed was collected. (section 240, Exhibit 15).

If a species has undergone genetic testing and breeding zones have been identified (Chapter 200), enter N/A in this field.

Breeding Zone:

Assigned to specific block or area of land identified in Chapter 200. Complete this field only when a breeding zone has been established by the Regional Geneticist; otherwise, leave blank.

Elevation [Upper, Lower, Midpoint]:

Record the highest and lowest elevation of the collection area in feet (100), this is the range of the collection. Record the average or the median as the midpoint in feet (50), geodatum NAD83.

Habitat-Type / Series:

Record alpha series and habitat type abbreviation.

Habitat-Code:

Use Forest Service Common Stand Exam codes.

Program Level:

• BULK - Bulked tree seed zone collection (level 1)

• DSA - Designated seed area (level 2) (Region 4)

• SCS - Seed collection stand (level 2) (Regions 1, 2 and 3)

• SPA - Seed Production area (level 3a)

• SIT - Selected individual trees (level 3b)

• PTW - Progeny tested wild (selected) trees (level 5)

• GT - Genetic test plantation (level 5)

• CB - Clone bank (level 5)

• BO - Breeding orchard (level 5)

• SO - Seed orchard (level 5; there are no level 4 seed orchards in Regions 1-

4) Genetic Base:

These numbers describe the breadth of the genetic base of the seed collection.

• Level 1 collection. The first two digits of the code specify the number of stands or areas where seed was collected. The second two digits are used to indicate the average number of trees or shrubs from which seed was collected in each stand or area.

• Levels 2 or 3 collection. The first two digits of the code for these collections is always 01 (one stand per seed lot). The second two digits are used to indicate the average number of trees from which cones were collected within the stand.

• Levels 4 or 5 collection.

For all species except western white pine the genetic base is

(number of stands : number of pedigrees) for only trees with collectable cones.

For western white pine the genetic base is (number of families :

number of unique individuals) for only trees with collectable cones.

Collection Method:

Identifies the methods by which the cone or seed is collected. Maximum of two.

1 - Felled Trees or Harvested Shrubs 2 - Climbing 3 - Mechanical (Tree Rake, Helicopter, Shaking, Man Lift) 4 - Shooting 5 - Pole Pruning 6 - Net Retrieval 7 - Clean Seed 8 - Squirrel Cache 9 - Other (for example, from recently dead trees)

Type of Collection:

Indicates the type of personnel used to collect the cones or seed.

1 - Force Account (USFS Crews) 2 - Contract 3 - Local Purchase 4 - Dealer Purchaser 5 - Cooperator 6 - Forest User

Seed Bank:

Used to identify the area of fiscal responsibility for the seed lot being collected.

1 - Working Capital Fund to Replace Inventory Used 2 - K-V Knutsen-Vandenberg (KV) Trust Fund 3 - Appropriated Range Improvement 4 - Appropriated Reforestation 5 - Appropriated Soil and Water Rehabilitation 6 - Appropriated Wildlife Improvement 7 - Donated Addition to Inventory 8 - Other (Identify in Remarks Section, for example, RTRT)

Area name:

For program levels 3-5 cone collection programs use name of seed production area, seed orchard or tree improvement area (Exhibits 01-06); otherwise use the most local area name.

Township, Range, Section, ¼ Section, Meridian:

Locations are to be reported to the quarter-section accuracy level. When townships or ranges are adjusted and indicate one-half, include this in the code as a .5 rather than a one-half. Collections may occur in a maximum of two, adjacent sections, both are recorded separated by a comma. Example: 01, 07.

Latitude and Longitude:

Location data are to be reported in decimal format to six places (geodatum NAD83).

Stored For:

Identifies who the seed is stored for if different than collecting unit. Enter the numeric codes for Region, National Forest, and Ranger District. Example: 011605.

Collector and Checker:

Assign the full names (no initials) of the collector and checker to each lot. The checker is the Forest or District officer responsible for the collection.

Grouping Number:

Two-digit code Examples: 01 or 03. Any time a single lot is bagged in more than one sack, assign a grouping number to all sacks of the same lot. Use a unique number for each lot. Place this same number on the tags of all cone and seed bags belonging to the same lot and on the Cone and Seed Handling Checklist.

Number of Containers:

The actual number of bags, sacks, etc.

Container Type:

Describe the containers holding the collection, example burlap sack.

X the appropriate box. Dry, Moist, or Wet.

Cone Mold When Shipped:

X the appropriate box. None, Light, Moderate, or Heavy.

Sound Seed / Cut Face:

The number of seeds per one cut face from five cone samples is recorded and then summed in the total column. The average number of filled seeds per one cut face of a cone (total number of seeds divided by number of cone samples) is recorded to the nearest whole number.

Remarks/Comments:

This field contains additional information pertinent to the lot.
