About this file

Specifications Summary

This is a Specifications document for equipment procurement by the Sustainable Biofuels and Coproducts Research Unit (SBCP) at the USDA-ARS Eastern Regional Research Center. The solicitation requires one micro-compounder and mini injection moulder unit with an integrated direct attachment transfer system to facilitate material transfer between equipment.

Micro-Compounder Requirements

The micro-compounder must be benchtop-sized with electrical requirements of 208V or 115V (115V preferred). Specifications include a 400W or greater drive motor, screw speed of 1 to 400 rpm or greater, co/counter rotation twin conical screws with torque rating of 5Nm/screw or greater, and maximum temperature capability of 350°C or higher. The unit must include integrated pressure transducers for melt viscosity data, integrated thermocouples, and rheological measurement software capable of viewing, measuring, analyzing, evaluating, and exporting data. Sample size capability must be greater than or equal to 3 cm³ (optimum 7 cm³, maximum 15 cm³), with transfer attachment die for injection moulder, extruder pressure of at least 300 bar, and an inert gas flush system. Installation, testing, calibration, training, and a one-year warranty are included.

Mini Injection Moulder Requirements

The mini injection moulder must be benchtop-sized (50x50x100cm or smaller) capable of small-scale operations of 5 grams or less with electrical requirements of 208V or 110V (110V preferred). Technical specifications include maximum injection pressure or force of 1100 bar or higher, processing section temperature range from ambient to 400°C or higher, mold temperature range from ambient to 250°C or higher, and barrel capability for direct transfer loading from compounder or manual loading using powders or pellets. The unit must include an ASTM D638 Type V tensile bar dogbone mold, integrated control unit for injection mold parameters, installation, testing, calibration, training, and a one-year warranty.
