About this file

This document is a technical specification for an in-line near infrared (NIR) spectrophotometer to be integrated into an existing Wintersteiger research plot combine for the Legume Quality Genetics Laboratory at Michigan State University's Sugarbeet and Bean Research Unit in East Lansing, Michigan. The equipment must measure seed quality traits, including protein content, during harvest operations and must be durable enough to withstand field conditions while maintaining precision suitable for dry bean breeding research.

The contractor must provide and install a mechanically rugged diode array NIR spectrometer with specific technical capabilities: 850 to 1650 nm spectral range, 256 pixel thermoelectrically cooled InGaAs photodiode array detector, spectral resolution with a 90 μm slit of less than 8 nm, absolute wavelength accuracy of less than 0.5 nm, no moving optical parts, 3D transmission grating polychromator with order filter, IP64 protection rating, and the ability to measure acceptable reflection spectra of bean samples in 10 milliseconds or less. The system must be controlled by software capable of integrating with the Wintersteiger Quantum Plot Combine Harvest Master data collection system to read and record field trial plot IDs, initiate multiple repeat measurements, and manage measurement timing. Additional requirements include an electronic dosing slide to ensure uniform material flow, assembly of spectrometer cabin components including wiring, and training on instrument use. The deliverable is due 10 weeks after purchase, with delivery to Karen Cichy, 1066 Bogue Street, Room 366, East Lansing, MI 48824. No government furnishings, travel, security requirements, or key personnel specifications are required.

Specifications Project: In-line Near Infrared Spectrophotometer for Research Plot Combine

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: A near infrared (NIR) spectrophotometer for in-line chemometric measurement of seed quality traits including protein, The NIR must be fitted to an existing Wintersteiger research plot combine.

2.0 Background: The Legume Quality Genetics Laboratory of the Sugarbeet and Bean Research Unit, East

Lansing, MI needs to develop the tools to assess bean nutritional and processing quality at/during harvest.

An NIR spectrophotometer with the capability to be incorporated into the Unit’s existing Wintersteiger research plot combine is needed. The NIR spectrophotometer must be durable enough to withstand field conditions and also have enough precision to make it a useful dry bean breeding research tool.

CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS

3.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks: Provide and install on existing research plot combine an in-line NIR spectrophotometer with the following capabilities

• A mechanically rugged diode array NIR spectrometer suitable for operation on a crop harvesting combine in operation in the field.

• 850 to 1650 nm spectral range

• A 256 pixel thermoelectrically cooled InGaAs photodiode array detector

• Spectral resolution with a 90 μm slit < 8 nm

• Absolute wavelength accuracy < 0.5 nm

• No moving optical parts

• 3D transmission grating polychromator including order filter

• sensor IP64 protection rating

• capable of measuring acceptable reflection spectra of bean samples in 10 milliseconds or less

• controlled by software capable of interacting with Wintersteiger Quantum Plot Combine Harvest Master data collection system to read and record field trial plot ids, initiate tens of repeat measurements and stop measurements after a time specified in settings or by the operator

• All spectral data collected is available to user

• software can routinely measure and save spectra from a single check sample for periodic measurement to test instrument stability and consistency

• electronic dosing slide to ensure a uniform material flow across the NIRS lens

• Assembling parts for the spectrometer in the cabin including the wiring

• Training on instrument use
