About this file

This document is a technical specification for 15 kV Strand-Filled, Jacketed, Primary Cable from Gainesville Regional Utilities' Electric System Approved Materials Manual. The specification provides detailed requirements for cable construction, including concentric neutral configuration, jacket specifications, testing protocols, and identification markings. The document outlines different configurations for single-phase and three-phase cable applications, with specific requirements for conductor size, neutral wire count, and wire gauge.

The technical specification includes comprehensive testing requirements, mandating both qualification and production sampling tests. Cables must be guaranteed in accordance with AEIC CS 8 standards, and each cable will feature detailed jacket printing including manufacturer's name, insulation type, conductor details, voltage rating, and manufacturing year. Test reports must be submitted with bids, and one copy of uniform certified production test reports must be sent to Gainesville Regional Utilities' Electric Standards department. The specification provides precise technical details for cable construction, including minimum jacket thickness, neutral wire application, and water pressure testing parameters.

Text version

7.1 The concentric neutral shall consist of bare annealed solid un-coated copper wires in accordance with ASTM B3, Latest Revision.

7. CONCENTRIC NEUTRAL

7.2 Cable intended for single phase applications shall have a concentric neutral with a conductance approximately equal to that of the central conductor. The full neutral construction shall be as follows:

7.3 Cable intended for three phase applications shall have a

concentric neutral with a conductance that is less than the central conductor. The reduced neutral construction shall be as follows:

7.4 The concentric neutral wires shall be applied helically with uniform spacing over the semi-conducting layer with a lay of not less than 6 or more than 10 times the diameter over the concentric wire.

8. JACKET

8.1 The outer layer jacket shall be non-conducting, black linear low density polyethylene extruded over the concentric neutral.

8.2 The jacket shall be extruded in a way to essentially embed and fill the space between the wires of the concentric neutral.

The minimum thickness of the jacket, as measured from the outer surface of the copper wires, shall be 0.045" for cables with diameters over 1.50". Three red stripes, equally spaced, shall be extruded into the jacket.

8.3 The jacket shall be free stripping and shall maintain contact with the insulation shield. The interface between the insulation shield and the jacket shall be tightly fitting but free stripping.

9. TESTS

9.1 The cable design shall have been tested in accordance with the Qualification Tests of the reference standards.

Qualification test reports shall be furnished with bids.

9.2 The cable supplied shall be tested in accordance with the Production Sampling Tests specified in the referenced standards.

One copy of the uniform certified production test reports shall be sent to:

Gainesville Regional Utilities Electric Standards PO Box 147117 Station E2-C Gainesville, FL 32614-7117

9.3 The effectiveness of the conductor filling compound shall be determined by a water pressure test. The water pressure test shall be performed in accordance with ICEA T-31-610 at 5 psig for 15 minutes.

10. IDENTIFICATION MARKINGS

10.1 The outer jacket shall have permanent indent printing for identification at maximum 2 foot intervals. The printing shall be clearly legible, straight and aligned properly. The information printed shall include the manufacturer's name, type and thickness of insulation, type and size of conductor, rated voltage, year of manufacture and appropriate footage and phase markings.

10.2 All single conductor cables shall have sequential footage markings. All paralleled three phase conductor cables shall have sequential footage markings on at least one cable. On the reel tags, indicate which Phase the "Drum Measurement" is taken.

10.3 All three paralleled conductor cables shall have phase

identification markings of "A Phase", "B Phase" and "C Phase".

with the reference standard.

11.2 Refer to Gainesville Regional Utilities, Supplementary

Conditions for Cable, Conductor and Wire for detailed packaging requirements.

12. GUARANTEE

12.1 The cable shall be guaranteed in accordance with AEIC CS 8.
