About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a federal contract opportunity related to the Accelerator Facilities Division (AFD) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The SOW describes the scope of work for two graduate students to provide research assistance and operational support for the AFD's Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) and Low Energy Accelerator Development (LEAD) Facility.

The key objectives include: 1) Assisting the ATF control system specialist with planned upgrades, testing, and maintenance; 2) Training as ATF and LEAD Facility Capability Duty Operators to participate in facility operations; 3) Analyzing ATF and LEAD machine performance, commissioning new hardware, and conducting experimental analysis; and 4) Participating in reviews, science planning meetings, and conferences. The students must have previous training and research experience at the ATF, and will be supervised by a University Principal Investigator with prior ATF expertise. The contract duration is 1 year with a possible 2nd year option.

The related federal contract opportunity is a Pre-Solicitation request for information, seeking qualified institutions to express interest and summarize their expertise in meeting the SOW requirements for ATF and LEAD Research and Operations. This is issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science.

Statement of Work

Title
Accelerator Facilities Division, Graduate Student Thesis Support for ATF and LEAD Research & Operations

Duration of Performance SOW Version 1 year V1

Background The Accelerator Facilities Division provides unique capabilities for students conducting thesis research related to high-brightness electron- and laser-beams and ultrafast electron diffraction capabilities. An ongoing ATF Experiment, AE116 “Intelligent Laser Control with Uncertainty Quantification for Electron Beam Generation,” which was previously reviewed and approved by the ATF Program Advisory Committee (APAC) requires research assistance from two graduate students, with previous knowledge of the ATF. Furthermore, the graduate student advisor would like these students to gain further experience with operating electron and laser beam systems at the ATF and Ultrafast Electron Diffraction apparatus, which is part of the Low Energy Accelerator Development (LEAD) Facility in Bldg. 912.

Scope of Work The students will work with the ATF staff, with support from a University Principal Investigator. In addition to participation in their approved experiment, AE116, they will engage with AFD staff members to work on the following efforts:

1. Assist the ATF Control System specialist to support planned upgrades, testing, and maintenance. In particular, the ATF is implementing a controls system upgrade from a CAMAC-based architecture to a VME64X architecture that requires extensive hardware programming, user interface design, and detailed validation testing. They will participate in all aspects of this effort.

2. They will train as ATF Capability Duty Operators to participate in facility operations during upcoming run periods.

3. They will train as LEAD Facility Capability Duty Operators as the new LEAD capabilities are commissioned and will participate in software development, hardware validation studies, and experimental operations of these capabilities.

4. Assist in the analysis of ATF and LEAD machine performance, help commission new or reinstalled hardware, and conduct experimental analysis.

5. Participate in reviews, science planning meetings, and conferences at the request of the AFD Director and other BNL management.

Requirements

· The students must have previous training and research experience at the ATF.

· The University will provide an experienced PI with prior ATF experience and expertise in accelerator science and data science techniques to supervise their overall effort.

· The students will be based at BNL and will work on-site with the AFD/ATF team.

Schedule The contract will be in place for 1 year, with a second year option, which may be executed to accommodate needs.
