About this file

This is an Equipment Specification for the design and procurement of a Fine Radial Collimator (FRC) for the CORELLI Spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The specification requires fabricating a collimator assembly with neutron-absorbing blades featuring a 1.3-degree angular separation, designed to accommodate high field magnet sample environments that cannot fit in the existing collimator. Key technical requirements include using isotopically-enriched boron 10 carbide powder (96% or greater) as the neutron absorber, creating thin stretched-film blades with precise dimensional tolerances, and constructing the assembly from non-magnetic materials like aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium.

The document specifies detailed requirements for the collimator's physical characteristics, including two-piece construction with 82 and 97-degree active areas, blade vertical active area between 29-32 inches, blade width of 9 inches, and strict tolerances for blade alignment and coating thickness. The seller must provide a comprehensive quality assurance program, manufacturing plan, and detailed documentation, including dimensional inspection reports and a Certificate of Compliance. The collimator will operate in a high vacuum environment with potential exposure to neutron and gamma fields, and large magnetic fields. The specification requires the seller to submit multiple documents for review and approval, with fabrication contingent on the Company's final design package approval.

2. Introduction

The CORELLI Spectrometer at SNS has requested a new Fine Radial Collimator (FRC) to be designed and procured to accommodate high field magnet sample environments. These high field magnet sample environments do not fit inside the existing collimator assembly.

3. Scope

This specification defines requirements for materials of construction, fabrication, inspection, and delivery to the Company of a complete Fine Radial Collimator Assembly. The Fine Radial Collimator Assembly shall be installed in the CORELLI Spectrometer Instrument.

The Fine Radial Collimator Assembly, hereinafter referred to as the Collimator Assembly or FRC, is described in the following sections. Any minor part not specifically defined, but required for complete assemblies, shall be considered included herein, unless specifically excluded.

Herein, Seller refers to parties responsible for providing the fabricated Collimator Assembly within the scope of this specification. The term “Company” refers to UT-Battelle, LLC and its representatives, including the SNS.

The Seller is responsible for fabrication, inspection, packaging, and shipping a complete Collimator Assembly in accordance with the requirements of this specification. Any exceptions to this specification shall be clearly noted as such in the Seller’s proposal documentation. Where exceptions are taken, the Seller shall propose alternatives.

4. Equipment Specification

The CORELLI Sample Scattering Vessel (SSV) consists of a sample chamber and a detector chamber. The chambers share the same vacuum space. The Collimator Assembly will mount inside the sample chamber of the vessel. Renderings of the CORELLI Vessel and these vacuum spaces are shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: External isometric view of CORELLI Sample Scattering Vessel

DETECTOR CHAMBER

SAMPLE CHAMBER

Figure 2: Plan view of CORELLI detector and sample vessel

The Collimator Assembly is composed of neutron absorbing blades with an angular separation of

1.3 degrees (blade center to blade center) as illustrated in Figure 3 and the Appendix. The blades consist of thin supporting foils coated with neutron-absorbing material. The blade-to-blade angular separation and the alignment of the blades in a true radial direction are critical to the neutronic performance of the collimator. The final blade separation should be identical over the entire span of the collimator, and the locational tolerance should be as tight as possible. The Seller shall clearly specify in the proposal submittal their fabrication tolerances for angular separation between blades, the angular deviation from a true radial direction, and the tolerances of the precision mounting system in the horizontal plane and tilt.

The Seller shall submit a dimensional inspection report prior to shipping the Collimator Assembly. The documentation shall include the as-measured average deviation of the angular separation between blades, the angular deviation from a true radial alignment of each blade, and coating thickness at a random location on each collimator foil.

The Seller shall provide 24 additional blades to the Company. The blades shall be packaged in a rigid container suitable for long term storage of the blades.

Figure 3: Section and isometric view of proposed fine radial collimator design

Collimator foils shall be of the stretched-film type. The foil design should be optimized to minimize thickness. The neutron absorber material shall be isotopically- enriched boron 10 carbide powder enriched to 96% or greater. The powder shall be mixed with a vacuum compatible binder component. The Company shall provide the Seller with the Boron 10 powder. The Seller shall clearly specify in their proposal submittal the following information:

• Foil material type

• Foil thickness

• Required Boron 10 carbide enrichment %

• Coating thickness (coated blade thickness minus foil thickness)

• Required Boron 10 carbide grit size

• Required mass of Boron 10 powder

The Company requests the Seller to comment upon the design capability for individual replacement blades to be installed and tensioned. If replacement blades can be provided the Seller shall provide a procedure for installing replacement blades.

The inner and outer radii of the collimator housing are shown on drawing BL09-20-M8U-8709- A10000 and in Table 1.

The Collimator Assembly will reside in the vicinity of high neutron and gamma fields as well as large magnetic fields. The structure of the radial collimator shall be constructed of non-magnetic materials, either stainless steel, titanium, or aluminum. Aluminum is the preferred choice due to its lighter weight and nonmagnetic properties. The Company requests the Seller to specify in their submittal the material alloy for the proposed collimator body and structure. The Collimator Assembly will be operated in a high vacuum environment, so the Seller shall use suitable materials and provide a means for trapped air to escape from mechanical interfaces.

During maintenance or when large sample environments are in use, the radial collimator will be removed from the instrument. Holes to accommodate both alignment and lifting features (tapped in the frame) are at locations shown on drawing BL09-20-M8U-8709-A10000.
