Notices
• No statements made by AFRL representatives at this ICM2 Industry Day should be construed as changing or amending the BAA. Any changes to the BAA will be accomplished by a formal BAA amendment at a later date.
• Questions & Answers will be recorded and published as an amendment to the BAA. We will not publish proprietary or competition sensitive information.
Private meetings with
• Intent
• Answer questions that include proprietary or competition sensitive information
• General questions should be asked during open session
• Process
• Teams of proposers interested in meeting should assemble directly after this presentation ends.
• A list of interested teams will be compiled.
• Teams will be randomly assigned a meeting time
• The length of time that each team receives depends on the number of teams that want to meet.
Acquisition Schedule (subject to change)
• BAA released 22 March
• Industry Day 12 April
• Proposals Due 22 May
• Proposal Evaluations Complete 8 June
• Contract Award 24 August
• Contract Completion 8 March 2017
PAYOFF TECHNICAL IDEAS
MOTIVATION MATERIALS DESIGN
• Integrated computational materials engineering for responsive virtual material design exploration
• Link matl requirements to systems requirements
• Systems engineering for composite matl design links processing, mfg, performance & sustainment
• Open architecture digital framework for material design & engineering
• Link industry, commercial, academic & other available computer codes & designer knowledge bases
• Virtual material design = time/cost savings
• 45-55% cost savings versus SOTA approach
• Time reduction in material development & insertion from 8-14 years to 2-4 years
• Accelerates matl design/development/test cycle
• Enables adaptable material designs to respond to changing environments or operations
• Uncertain futures & threats outpace our ability to create & field affordable, effective systems
• Design & validation hindered by lack of virtual representation of materials—limited adaptability
• Need a systems engineering approach to accelerate materials development and insertion
• Opening the materials design space requires integrated synthesis, analysis & design tools

What we are looking for
• Approach for linking design phases (ICME architecture framework)
• Assessment of the SOA
• Articulation of the benefits of the proposed approach over SOA
• Sufficiently focused such that it can be accomplished within available funds and schedule
• Engagement of M&P, Structures, and Design communities
• Must include participation by airframe and engine design authority
• Must articulate planned participation
• Target component(s) defined by proposers
• Traceable Rough order of Magnitude (ROM) potential cost savings and Return on Investment (ROI) to USAF systems
• Key feature articles
• Based on target component(s)
• At least yearly
• Intended to show program progress
• Utilize mature structural high temperature polymer composite system
• bismaleimide and/or polyimide
• Designer quality information via traditional approaches is available
• Focus on use of existing models
• Should not develop new models
• Can mature models if needed
• Plan to capture lessons learned
• Identify and document outstanding pervasive ICME needs
• Openness of work
• The general ICME approach employed and results of the demonstration(s) should be amenable to open presentation through public forums
• Developed approach for framework should be available
