About this file

This document appears to be a set of Questions and Answers regarding the current state of the B-52 technical manuals and the planned conversion to the S1000D standard.

The key details are: The B-52 technical manuals currently use a combination of step-by-step checks, graphics/schematics, and tables for fault isolation. Approximately 355 technical manuals totaling 120,000 pages will need to be converted from SGML to XML format following the S1000D Version 4.1 standard. Additionally, 40,000 illustrations will need to be converted to a standard SVG format. The work will result in approximately 15,000 Data Modules using a structured System, Sub-System, Sub-Sub-System Numbering (SSSN) schema. The B-52 Work Unit Code Manual will also require an update. The contractor will be required to validate the entire database against a contractor-developed Business Rules Exchange (BREX) Data Module.

Text version

Question: How the fault isolation manuals currently show fault trees? Are they currently graphics or are they in a tabular format? If they are currently tagged content or done as illustrations.

Response: The Troubleshooting Procedures & Malfunction Analysis Index of B-52 Maintenance TO’s use a combination of step-by-step checks, Figures (Graphics/Schematics), and Tables. As well we utilize step by step Malfunction Indexing fault trees. Such as ‘1. If NO go to step 2 if YES perform step 3’. As far as tagged content, none of our technical content is SSSN.

Question:

1. Regarding the current state of the B-52 technical manuals (TMs): What percentage of the

TMs are in Flat File .pdf? Smart .pdf? SGML? XML? Are there any other formats?

2. Regarding the 40,000 graphics files, what is the expectation for functionality once converted? Do you have a list broken down by percentage of each type of file format (SVG, GGM, CALS, GIF, PDF, TIFF, JPEG, etc.)?

Response:

The only two graphic formats we use in the SGML are CGM and TIFF. I don’t know the exact percentage of each type, though. Most are CGM. Also, all the graphics are SUPPOSED to be CGM, but a lot of them are just TIFFs that were saved as CGM; or are some type of hybrid (like a component is obviously a TIFF (rastor graphic) and the callouts were drawn in later (vector graphic)).
