2. PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND

Assateague Island National Seashore operates continuously year-round and provides day use areas, ranger stations, hiking trails and campgrounds. These areas all need potable water to operate and provide the proper services for visitors to the park. The existing water infrastructure that provides potable water to the island is over two decades old and has been pieced together as fixes have occurred over the years leading to water pressure differences, varying water quality as well as increased downtime of water service. Due to these various factors, completely abandoning most of this existing water infrastructure and constructing and installing a new water utility has been determined to be the best method to remediate water distribution throughout the island. This new water system is set to be designed for future use of the park as well as ease of maintenance when issues do arise.
