About this file

This document is a federal solicitation (W912HZ25Q1ALZ) for a Laser Micropipette Puller, with quotes due by September 10, 2025. The solicitation requires a specialized scientific instrument for electrochemical research, with specific technical requirements including a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, capability to pull capillaries into nanoscale pipettes, and ability to work with quartz glass and borosilicate capillaries under 2 mm in outer diameter. Key specifications mandate the device must produce at least 2 usable pipettes per capillary, support multiple programmable settings, and allow adjustment of pulling parameters such as pull, delay, and velocity.

The procurement is for the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) CERL, with delivery required 3-4 weeks after contract award. The instrument is designed for sensitive electrochemical experiments, with critical features including clean laser-pulled pipette tips, nanoscale tip diameters for monitoring microscale biological samples, and flexible programming to accommodate varied research needs. The detailed requirements suggest the solicitation is seeking a highly specialized scientific instrument with precise manufacturing and experimental capabilities.

Solicitation W912HZ25Q1ALZ Quotes due by September 10, 2025 Description of Requirement This purchase is for a Laser Micropipette Puller. To comply it will need to match the requirements below:

• Includes a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser

• Able to pull capillaries into pipettes with a tip diameter on the nanoscale (nm)

• Able to pull quartz glass and borosilicate capillaries with an outer diameter (O.D.) less than 2 mm

• Able to pull at least 2 usable pipettes from one capillary

• Number of programs: More than 1

• Able to adjust parameters such as pull, delay, velocity, etc. within each program

Characteristics for the features above are given below:

• Laser requirements: Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. CO2 allows for the melting of quartz and conventional glasses. Using this laser source also allows the capillaries to be pulled into pipettes with clean tips (no metal or residual residue) that are crucial for sensitive electrochemistry experiments.

• Pipette diameter tip size and scale requirements. Tip diameter of the pulled pipettes must be on a nanoscale (nm). A tip diameter on a nanoscale ensures that a pipette can monitor electrochemical signal and collect data from biological samples with components that are on a microscale.

• Glass Type requirements: Capillaries need to be quartz glass and borosilicate to ensure that the pipette material used does not inhibit electrochemical signal during data collection.

• Maximum Glass Size (Outer Diameter-O.D.) requirements: Less than 2 mm O.D. for quartz glass and borosilicate capillaries. This ensures that the capillaries used are small enough for nanoscale electrochemical experiments.

• Usable pipette requirements: Able to pull 2 usable pipettes. Pulling a capillary into 2 usable pipettes is necessary to ensure there is reproducibility among samples as well as for tip imaging on an optical microscope later after electrochemistry experiments are completed.

• Number of Program requirements: More than 1. This allows the researcher to have the capability to develop and save multiple program parameters for different electrochemical experiments since programs vary based on the sample being analyzed.

• Pulling parameter program requirements: Able to adjust pulling parameters such as pull, delay, velocity, etc. within each program. These parameters are crucial for ensuring that a pipette tip is a specific diameter and shape, and electrochemical experiments will be greatly affected if these parameters cannot be adjusted within each instrument program.

Delivery to ERDC CERL is required 3-4 weeks after award.
