Statement of Need: Garmin inReach Mini 2

The USGS, Wetland Aquatic Research Center (WARC) in Lafayette, LA supporting the Ecosystems Mission Area requests a Garmin inReach Mini 2 satellite location device. The primary use is for supervisors and safety managers to track field crews working in remotes areas. At any time, a safety manager or supervisor can log into a specific Mini2 location device and track a field crew travel. The inReach Mini 2 can transmit location every 2 minutes. Most field location are very remote with little to no cell service in case of emergency. The resources identified in this procurement is to support accurate location of field crews in the event of an emergency. The safety of our employees is a priority of the USGS. In making this procurement decision, USGS considered many options, and based on local dealers, the Garmin inReach Mini 2, has a high functionality and reliability in very remote areas.

To make full use of the Garmin Inreach Mini 2, a Garmin monthly subscription must be purchased. Subscription plans are needed for each of WARC’s 25 Garmin devices. Based on our needs we have selected the PRO: Premier subscription service.
