Longstreet and Culp’s Towers Flagpole Removal

The Longstreet Observation Tower, Culp’s Hill Observation Tower are located within Gettysburg

National Military Park. Observation decks at Longstreet (75’), Culp’s Hill (60’) are currently open to the public.

The poor condition of flagpoles at the Longstreet and Culp’s Hill towers have been identified as a high priority item for removal due to corrosion along the length of the poles, until a larger comprehensive project can be undertaken to preserve/restore the towers in their entirety.

Structural Description

The Gettysburg Observation Towers are light steel frame structures, including masonry foundations, steel superstructure, and cast iron components. The towers are roughly 25-ft square in plan at the base, with varying heights.

Scope of Work

This project is for the removal of the flagpoles and associated support brackets at the top of the Longstreet and

Culp’s Hill Towers.

Longstreet Tower is about 90 feet tall with four tiers of braced levels, below the observation deck. The observation deck of Longstreet is about 75 feet above grade, with a square hip roof extending another 15 feet above. A flagpole also extends above the tower roof another 12 feet. The flagpole is a 30ft +/- tall 8” hollow steel pipe.

Culp’s Hill Tower is 75 feet tall with an observation deck about 60 feet above grade and similar hipped roof and flagpole. Like Longstreet, Culp’s Hill Tower has four braced tiers, but each tier is shorter making the tower appear squatter. The flagpole is a 30ft +/- tall 4” hollow steel pipe.

Flagpoles shall be removed without causing any damage or destabilizing the surrounding tower structure or supports. Once removed the flagpoles will be moved to a location within the park for storage.
