Longstreet and Culp’s Towers Flagpole Removal The Longstreet Observation Tower, Culp’s Hill Observation Tower are located within Gettysburg National Military Park. Observation decks at Longstreet (75’), Culp’s Hill (60’) are currently open to the public.
The poor condition of flagpoles at the Longstreet and Culp’s Hill towers have been identified as a high priority item for removal due to corrosion along the length of the poles, until a larger comprehensive project can be undertaken to preserve/restore the towers in their entirety.
Brief Tower History The towers were designed and constructed in 1895 – 1896 by the Gettysburg Battlefield Commission. The towers were built to aid in military teaching and training. The towers were built under the supervision of park commissioner Colonel John Page Nicholson and engineer and later park superintendent Emmor B. Cope, with engineering assistance from S.A Hammond. The structures were viewed as extensions of the Park Avenue system and were constructed by Variety Iron Works, a bridge company from Cleveland, Ohio.
Structural Description The Gettysburg Observation Towers are light steel frame structures, including masonry foundations, steel superstructure, and cast iron components. The towers are roughly 25-ft square in plan at the base, with varying heights.
