About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a mule packing service at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO). The National Park Service requires a mule packer to support the Cave Research Foundation's (CRF) backcountry expedition from September 15-19, 2025, to explore and map caves. The packer will transport approximately 642 pounds of gear and water, including camping and caving equipment for a 6-person crew, over a 5.25-mile one-way route into the backcountry.

The SOW details the long-standing partnership between CRMO and CRF, which has been conducting cave mapping and resource assessments annually since 2016. This year's expedition aims to extend further into the backcountry, requiring mule assistance to safely transport essential supplies. Without mule support, each crew member would need to carry approximately 130 pounds of gear, which is deemed unreasonable and unsafe. The mule packer will deliver the gear before September 15th and retrieve it after September 19th, facilitating the CRF's research efforts in the national monument's wilderness area.

CRMO MULE PACKING STATEMENT OF WORK

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO) has the need to employ a mule packer in order to facilitate a back country expedition of the Cave Research Foundation (CRF) which will be exploring/ assessing and mapping caves for/ in coordination with CRMO from Sept 15th-19th 2025.

CRMO has a long partnership with the CRF. The CRF has been coming to CRMO for 2-3 weeks each summer/ fall since 2016 to map caves and assess resources within caves (geological, hydrological, biological, cultural, archeological etc.). They produce high quality maps and reports which allow CRMO resource staff to target caves for protection, further study and research. In the years since 2016 the CRF has covered a great number of caves in the front-country of CRMO.

Starting last year, they began to venture into the backcountry with the help of a mule packer. This year it is the intent of CRF to go even further (an additional 2.25 miles) into the backcountry with one additional surveyor (6 total) than last year. Doing this work in the backcountry. brings challenges with regards to how to transport gear, supplies and drinking water into the backcountry in order for a crew of 6 to stay and camp in backcountry, primitive conditions for 5 days. Detailed supplies and gear lists have been drawn up and without some type of mule or horse assistance each member of the crew would need carry approximately 130 lbs. on their back. This is not reasonable or safe. In order to do this efficiently and safely CRMO wishes to employ a mule packer which can haul the needed supplies (water, camping gear, caving gear etc.) approximately 5.25 miles (one-way) into the back country and retrieve the gear at the trip’s end.

PACKING REQUIREMENTS:

Timing:

The packer would haul gear 5.25 miles (one-way) into the back country/ wilderness of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve using mules or horses on or before Sept 15th and retrieve the gear on or after Sept 19th.

Gear/ Supplies to haul:

Camping gear, caving gear and personal gear for 6 person CRF crew weighing approximately 300 lbs and ~42-gallon (~336) lbs. of water (eight 5.2-gallon containers)
