All measurements and dimensions are approximate and must be verified in the field. All offerors are highly encouraged to attend the site visit and examine existing conditions before submitting quotes. Any failure of the Contractor to take the actions described and acknowledged in this paragraph will not relieve the Contractor from responsibility for estimating properly the difficulty and cost of successfully performing the work, or for proceeding to successfully perform the work without additional expense to the Government. All offerors will be held to have the same knowledge concerning the site and the on-ground conditions as if they had inspected the job site.

C. Submit sample of nails with product information.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Grading rules of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau (CSSB).

1.5 GUARANTEE

A. Furnish a warranty in writing against a defective roofing system for 5 years from date of acceptance. Warranty shall include repairing if necessary to maintain roof in a watertight condition.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 SHINGLES

A. Certigrade No. 1 Blue Label Alaskan Yellow Cedar Shingles 18” Perfection; width 4” minimum, with 10% of bundle allowed down to 3”. 5/2 ¼” thick (5 butts together measure 2 ¼” thick). Clear heartwood; 100% edge grain; no defects.

B. HIP AND RIDGE UNITS

Solid wood ridges and hips shall be manufactured of Alaskan Yellow Cedar 1x6 with bevel cuts to create alternate overlaps.

2.2 NAILS

A. Stainless steel 4d annular ring shank nails with a 7/32”-1/4” head diameter (cedar

07313-2 shingle/shake nails or box nail style head); 6d length for hips and ridges. Nails should be long enough to penetrate the sheathing approximately ¾”. For a nail gun use Simpson Strong-Tie Swan Secure Fasteners 304 stainless steel collated decking nail, 15 degrees ring shank 4d for the field and 6d for the hips and ridges making sure those lengths penetrate approximately ¾” into the sheathing.

2.3 FLASHING AND VALLEY METAL

A. All flashing, valleys, and ventilation jacks should be 16 ounce copper.

B. Valley flashing should be center crimped W style valley metal with ½” crimp on edges. Any joints should be overlapped at least 6”. Flashing shall be wide enough to extend 11” on each side of valley centerline.

C. Step flashing shall have a minimum horizontal width of 2 ½” and minimum vertical width of 2 ½”. Step flashing shall have at least 3” overlap.

D. Head and apron flashing should have a minimum horizontal width of 6” and minimum vertical width of 3”.

E. Vent jack flashing shall extend no less than 6” in all directions.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 NAILING

A. Use two nails per shingle, located not over 3/4 inch from the edge of shingle at each side and 1-1/2 inches above the exposure line. Verify that nails penetrate sheathing at least ¾”. Drive nails flush, but not into shingle surface. If a nail gun is to be used contractor shall demonstrate nailing prior to work commencing to get approved psi for proper nail depth.

3.2 LAYING SHINGLES - GENERAL

A. For applications not covered in this specification, refer to CSSB Roof Manual (http://www.cedarbureau.org/installation-and-maintenance/roof-manual/).

B. Substrate: For roofs with skip sheathing apply shingles directly on wood. Use no felt underlay or interlay. For roofs with solid sheathing apply a synthetic breathable underlayment with a continuous ventilation product Cedar Breather or approved equivalent over the underlayment. Apply shingles on top of the ventilation product.

C. Spacing: Shingle spacing shall be based off moisture content of shingles. Moisture content shall be tested prior to installation with NPS personnel present. If moisture content is 15% or less shingles should be spaced 1/8”-1/4”. 16%-19% spaced 1/8”-1/16”, D. Exposure: 4-1/2 inches.

E. Lines: Lay shingle butts in straight lines. Check lines frequently.

F. Side Lap: Stagger joints between adjacent courses at least 1-1/2 inches. Avoid joint

07313-3 alignment between alternate courses with a stagger of at least ¾”.

3.3 DOUBLED FIRST COURSE

A. At eaves, project first course to overhang approximately 1-1/2 inches beyond the fascia. Make first course a double layer of shingles with joints in both layers staggered.

3.4 GABLE ENDS

A. Project shingles a 1” over the gable or rake end of the building.

3.5 VALLEY FLASHING

A. Lay strip of synthetic breathable underlayment if not already present, wide enough to insulate valley metal from laying directly on sheathing. Before installing metal, cover underlayment with rosin paper slip sheet.

B. Install valley shingles by working from the valley outwards, using the wide shingles reserved for this purpose. Shingles shall be installed lapping the valley flashing not less than 7” on each side. Select shingle widths that will enable nails to be kept as far removed as possible from centerline of valley metal. Do not lay shingles with grain parallel with the centerline of valleys.

C. Expose metal at least 2 inches from the W in the valley, allowing for at least 4 inches of exposed metal. Trim valley shingles to conform to these lines.

3.6 STEP FLASHING

A. Step flashing shall be used where vertical surfaces occur in connection with slopes.

They shall be formed of separate pieces and installed in step fashion and each piece shall lap not less than 3”, one flashing installed on each course concealed under the covering course.

3.7 HIPS AND RIDGES

A. Center a strip of synthetic breathable underlayment over the hip and ridge, under the hip and ridge shingle caps. Underlayment should not be visible once the shingle caps are installed.

B. Install solid ridge board with alternate overlaps, concealed nailing, and with a 4-1/2” exposure. Nails should be longer than nails used in the field, approximately 6d and penetrate the sheathing approximately ¾”.
