About this file

This is a Scope of Work (SOW) for the construction and installation of net pen systems for the Klamath Falls National Fish Hatchery to support the rearing and acclimation of endangered Lost River and Shortnose Sucker populations in the Upper Klamath Basin.

The SOW specifies two identical net pen systems, each consisting of a 120' x 25' fish pen frame, a 25' x 59' x 15' fish net package, anchor systems, and wave attenuator packages. The fish pen frames feature dual 18" HDPE pontoons, non-treated Douglas fir lumber (2x6 and 2x8), 1.5" x 1.5" fiberglass decking, a 40" removable rail system, and both perimeter and center walkways. Fish net packages include 0.25" x 0.25" polyester mesh, 3/8" polyester framing lines, 5/16" chain around bottom perimeters, and 2" x 2" black twisted polyethylene bird netting with support lines. Anchor packages contain 16 concrete block anchors (1,650 lbs. each in-water weight), 3/4" galvanized chain, anchor crown line floats, six chain-through buoys with hardware, shackles, and reflective tape. Wave attenuator packages feature 24" x 50' DR17 HDPE pipe with 4' rubber skirts (20 lbs. per foot). Installation includes mobilization/demobilization, a 4-man crew, 12,000-lb forklift rental, boat/barge services, and complete assembly of pen, net, and anchor systems. Shipping requires three 48-foot flatbeds per pen. The systems must withstand freezing conditions up to 10" and impacts from floating ice chunks up to 10" deep. Identical specifications apply to Gerber Reservoir, with anticipated additional costs for increased travel distance and shipping to that remote location.

Klamath Sucker Net Pen Rearing (1/4” mesh size) Scope of Work (SOW)

The Klamath Falls National Fish Hatchery is currently in the process of building a new hatchery program to help conserve and restore listed endemic sucker populations in the Upper Klamath Basin, including endangered Lost River and Shortnose Suckers. In addition to needing more rearing space to grow suckers to a larger size, we also need to provide areas for long term acclimation to wild lake environments, which data has shown leads to higher post stocking survival and greater persistence and long term repeat detections of individuals from year to year than simply raising and stocking directly from the hatchery.

Fish Pen systems (with the netting rolled up on the deck for storage) have to withstand freezing in the lake of up to 10” and survive impacts by floating ice chunks that are up to 10” deep
