About this file

This is a Salient Characteristics document (S25088) that specifies requirements for a Borehole Winch System and associated cables for geophysical logging operations.

The Borehole Winch System shall be a portable, heavy-duty logging winch capable of positioning Mount Sopris analog and digital QL geophysical probes compatible with Mount Sopris single conductor cable heads in boreholes. The system must include 1000 meters of 1/8" diameter single conductor cable, a ¼ horsepower motor with automatic level wind system and mechanical brake, a precision measuring wheel and rotary encoder, and a slip-ring connection for surface-to-downhole communication. The winch shall operate from 120 VAC external power with a motor controller maintaining constant cable payout speed under varying loads, include up/down speed control features, operate at speeds up to at least 85 feet per minute, support loads up to at least 100 pounds, include a tension alarm cutoff feature, and feature a manual crank for power-loss situations. Additionally, the system shall include a USB interface for laptop communication with Mount Sopris Matrix logging systems, be ruggedized for harsh environments, include a tripod and heavy-duty transport case, and provide mounting hardware for the Mount Sopris Matrix data logging acquisition box.

The procurement includes three supporting cables: a signal cable (1.5 to 2.0 feet in length) for interfacing the winch to a Mount Sopris Matrix data logger console, a USB cable (6 feet in length) for interfacing the data logger to a laptop computer port, and a 2-conductor "mud plug" style cable (at least 30 feet in length) used in geophysical surveys for transmitting subsurface data. A power cable (1.5 to 2.0 feet in length) for interfacing the winch to an optional compatible data logger is also required.
