About this file
This document is a specifications document for a Digital Gel Imaging System procurement. The objective is to procure, deliver, and set up a complete digital gel documentation system for laboratory use in imaging and analyzing nucleic acid gels, protein gels, and western blots.
The system must feature a high-resolution, cooled 20.48 Megapixel Back-Side Illuminated CMOS sensor with dynamic range exceeding 3.5 orders of magnitude and 65,536 grey-level bit depth. Required illumination sources include trans-illumination (UV, Blue, Amber LEDs) and epi-illumination (UVA, Green LEDs), with factory-installed, precalibrated emission filters (520/230 BP, 590/110 BP, 695 LP, and clear channel). The benchtop unit must not exceed 36 cm × 48 cm × 36 cm and include an integrated multi-touch display screen (1024 × 768 resolution) with internal processing. The system must feature automated, application-specific tray recognition; precalibrated autofocus for any digital zoom level; and dual auto-exposure algorithms. The procurement package must include a UV/Stain-Free sample tray supporting chemiluminescent blots, stain-free gels, ethidium bromide, and SYPRO Ruby, plus support for two-color fluorescent multiplex western blotting. Pre-loaded onboard software and compatibility with Image Lab Desktop Software (Security Edition) for FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliance are required.
The contract includes three service phases: Phase I covers FOB Destination shipping and inspection; Phase II includes vendor installation or field representative setup with initial sensor calibration and Smart Tray Technology verification; Phase III requires vendor-provided digital or on-site user training covering system startup, protocol configuration, image exporting, and total protein normalization workflows. A minimum 12-month manufacturer warranty covering hardware, optical components, sensor cooling, and touchscreen functionality is required, along with technical support via telephone, email, and software updates throughout the warranty period.

Digital Gel Imaging System Specifications
1. Project Objective and Scope The objective of this contract is the procurement, delivery, and setup of a digital gel documentation system. The instrument will be integrated into the laboratory infrastructure to provide high-sensitivity digital imaging, documentation, and quantitative analysis of nucleic acid gels, protein gels, and chemiluminescent/fluorescent western blots. The contract includes the base imaging system, proprietary application-specific trays, and compliant image analysis software.
2. Technical Specifications & Deliverables
The Vendor shall supply a complete, fully functioning Digital Gel imaging System meeting or exceeding the following hardware, software, and performance specifications:
Optical & Detector Specifications
● Sensor Technology: Must feature a high-resolution, cooled at a minimum of 20.48 Megapixel (MP) with Back-Side Illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor to ensure high pixel density and sensitivity matching larger shared instruments.
● Dynamic Range: Must deliver a wide dynamic range of >3.5 orders of magnitude with a 65,536 grey-level bit depth to allow precise quantification of both faint and high-intensity bands on the same blot or gel.
● Illumination Sources: Must feature long-lasting, all-LED illumination arrays including:
o Trans-illumination: UV, Blue, and Amber LEDs.
o Epi-illumination: UVA and Green LEDs.
● Emission Filters: Must include factory-installed, precalibrated filters: 520/230 BP, 590/110 BP, and 695 LP, alongside a clear channel for chemiluminescence.
Hardware & Automation Capabilities
● Physical Footprint: The unit must be a Benchtop space-saving design not exceeding dimensions of 36 cm x 48 cm x 36 cm (W x D x H) to accommodate space-constrained laboratories.
● Display Interface: Should include Integrated multi-touch display screen (1024 x 768 resolution) driven by an internal computer processing unit.
● Should include automated, application-specific tray recognition. The system must automatically identify the inserted tray and dynamically adjust imaging parameters, excitation wavelengths, and software options.
● Onboard Automation: Must feature precalibrated autofocus for any digital zoom level and dual auto-exposure algorithms (rapid or optimal) to ensure experimental reproducibility.
Sample Trays & Application Scope
The procurement package must include:
● UV/Stain-Free Sample Tray: Designed for chemiluminescent blots, stain-free gels/blots, ethidium bromide, and SYPRO Ruby.
● Stain-Free Technology Support: The system must natively to enable total protein normalization, eliminating the need to strip and reprobe for traditional housekeeping proteins.
● Multiplex Fluorescence: Must be optimized to support two-color fluorescent multiplex western blotting via specialized nanoparticles (e.g., StarBright Blue 520 and 700 secondary antibodies).
Software & Cloud Connectivity
● Onboard Software: Pre-loaded Software for user profile administration, optimized application presets, data exporting, and direct print functionality.
● Analysis Software & 21 CFR Part 11 Compliance: Inclusion of/compatibility with Image Lab Desktop Software (Security Edition) to support advanced band quantitation, lane profiles, and electronic records tracking to fulfill FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements.
3. Scope of Services
Phase I: Logistics and Delivery
● Shipping: FOB Destination. The Vendor is responsible for the secure transport and delivery of all components directly to the specified facility address.
● Unboxing & Inspection: Lab personnel and/or the Vendor representative will inspect the unit for visual or mechanical defects upon receipt.
Phase II: Setup and Verification
● Installation: The system is an all-in-one benchtop unit. The Vendor shall provide self-installation guidance or field representative setup to confirm physical connection, verify touchscreen response, and execute initial sensor calibration.
● System Check: Verification of the Smart Tray Technology using the included UV/Stain-Free sample tray.
Phase III: User Training
● Orientation: The Vendor provide digital or on-site instruction covering basic system startup, custom protocol configuration within Image Lab Touch, image exporting (USB, Network, etc.), and total protein normalization workflows.
4. Warranty and Support
● Warranty: Minimum 12-month manufacturer warranty covering internal hardware, optical components, sensor cooling mechanisms, and touch screen functionality.
● Technical Support: Access to technical support via telephone, email, and software updates for both Image Lab Touch and Desktop variants during the warranty period.
