3.0 EXECUTION:
01 11 00-20
3.1 General Excavation
Perform excavation of every type of material encountered within the limits of the project to the lines, grades, and elevations indicated and as specified. Perform the grading in accordance with the typical sections shown and the tolerances specified in paragraph FINISHING. During construction, perform excavation in a manner and sequence that will provide proper drainage at all times.
3.2 Removal of Tress
Large trees, both standing and fallen, line the shoreline area. Care should be taken to preserve those trees that stand above the 1950’ elevation and do not have the root area undercut at the present time. All trees that must be removed will be transported to a location agreed upon by both the COR and Contractor.
Regulations preventing removal of standing trees are in place from April 1 to July 15. If trees are going to be removed during these dates coordination will be performed between the Corps and other agencies, prior to any standing trees being removed.
3.3 Base Preparation for Shoreline Repair
3.3.1 Prior to the placement of riprap, the slope shall be graded to 1 foot vertical to 2.5 foot horizontal (1V:2.5H). The slope shall be graded in a manner that does disturb material beneath the sub-base elevation. All grading shall conform to the lines and grades indicated on the typical drawings. At the base of the slope the Contractor shall extend the slope along the same grade to 2 feet below the ground surface, forming a toe trench. The two feet measurement shall be from the existing ground to the deepest point of the trench, excluding teeth marks imprints.
3.3.2 Areas of the slope that have experienced sloughing, scouring, or voids that prohibit a uniform slope from the toe to the shoulder shall be repaired prior to final grading of the earthen slope. Deficiencies shall be repaired by placing graded materials from adjacent areas in vertical lifts within the deficient area. The Contractor shall utilize the method benching both horizontally and vertically when placing material into the deficient area. The benches shall be no more than 1 foot in the vertical and 1 foot in the horizontal into the embankment. This method shall begin at the lowest point of the deficient area and proceed up the slope in a stair step manner. The Contractor shall place material in no more than a 1 foot vertical lift.
3.3.3 After completion of the foot lift the Contractor shall compact soil by either operating a rubber tired machine, sheepsfoot roller, or vibratory plate compactor a minimum of 3 passes over the entire area. To ensure proper compaction, the Contractor shall visually inspected each lift and ensure that and no more than a ¼” indentation is made to the surface from the Contractor walking across the surface. After each lift and prior to placement of the next lift the Contractor shall scarify the preceding lift across the entire lift surface a minimum of 2” in depth to allow for soil adhesion between layers.
3.4 Placement of Filter Cloth
Filter fabric as specified in Table 2 shall be placed on the properly graded foundation. Placement of filter fabric shall be in strict conformance with the manufacturer’s written instructions and recommendations. The filter fabric should not extend into the lake beyond the riprap layer, rather it should be placed so that the furthest extent is at the deepest point in the toe trench. Filter cloth shall be secured in place by a 12” Geopin with washer at increments that prevent the cloth from sliding during rock placement.
01 11 00-21
3.5 Bedding Material
A layer of ASTM No. 57 course aggregate shall be placed upon the filter fabric prior to placement of riprap.
Material shall be placed and graded to follow the lines of the slope. The material does not require compaction. The material shall be placed from the bottom of the toe to the top of the slope. Bedding material is to be placed uniformly across the slope in a 6” layer +0.00”/-0.25”.
3.6 Rip-Rap Placement
Rock shall be placed uniformly in final position using powered equipment. Contractor shall not allow steel tracked equipment to transit over or on top of rip-rap being placed. Placement shall commence at the toe and proceeding up the slope. Dropping stone from heights greater than 2 feet can cause fracturing of the rip-rap and thus is not authorized, unless work area is partially submerged. If work area is partially submerged, the Contractor shall make every attempt to limit the height of the drop as to limit the impact of rock to rock contact when placing. Depth of riprap shall be at least 2 feet thick extending from the bottom of the key trench to the top elevation of the existing campground, parking lot, or otherwise noted adjoining area.
In some cases the placed rip rap will not reach the height of the adjoining campground. In those cases the bank will be sloped according to specifications and reseeded. An estimated length and width is provided for each area. The quantity of small stones shall be kept as low as possible, sufficient only to fill the voids between the larger stones.
Care shall be taken that this small material is well distributed throughout the mass and not allowed to segregate or form pockets of small stone. All bridging shall be broken down.
Large interstices, or open channels, or voids shall be filled by chinking or otherwise manipulating the rock. The finished riprap surface shall in general conform to the slope lines shown on attachment and tie into any existing revetment at the site. The final product shall appear uniform across the placement. The Contractor shall ensure that depressions, voids, and mounding are manipulated as to provide a uniform appearance.
3.7 Grass Seeding
3.7.1 Ground Preparation
Provide soil preparation prior to planting (including soil conditioners as required), fertilizing, seeding, and surface topdressing of all newly graded finished earth surfaces, unless indicated otherwise, and at all areas inside or outside the limits of construction that are disturbed by the Contractor's operations. The Contractor shall prepare the graded areas by by disking, harrowing, tilling or other method approved by the Contracting Officer. Remove debris and stones larger than 3/4 inch in any dimension remaining on the surface after finish grading. Correct irregularities in finish surfaces to eliminate depressions. Protect finished topsoil areas from damage by vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
3.7.2 Seed Application Seasons and Conditions
Do not seed when ground is muddy, frozen, snow covered, or in an unsatisfactory condition for seeding. If special conditions exist that may warrant a variance in the above seeding dates or conditions, submit a written request to the Contracting Officer stating the special conditions and proposed variance. Seeding may be accomplished through one of two methods: broadcasting onto bare ground then lightly harrowing the soil to cover seed, or drilling grass seed directly into the soil, no greater than 1/4” deep. If broadcast method is utilized, then immediately after seeding, firm entire area except for slopes in excess of 3 to 1 with a roller not exceeding 90 pounds for each foot of roller width. If seeding is performed with
01 11 00-22 cultipacker-type seeder or by drill, rolling may be eliminated. Application rate shall be 100 lbs. to the acre for broadcast and 50 lbs. to the acre for drilling.
3.7.3 Erosion Control
Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, where indicated or as directed by the Contracting Officer.
Erosion control blanket shall be orientated in vertical strips and anchored with staples on 4 foot centers. Adjacent strips shall be overlapped to allow for installation of a common row of staples that anchor through the nettings of both blankets. Horizontal joints between erosion control blankets shall be sufficiently overlapped with the uphill end on top for a common row of staples so that the staples anchor through the nettings of both blankets.
