About this file

This is a Specifications document for a borehole camera system procurement by the USGS Virginia–West Virginia Water Science Center (VA-WV WSC).

The VA-WV WSC requires a standalone borehole camera system to replace their broken unit, which is essential for investigating and evaluating the integrity of 447 active groundwater monitoring wells and any future wells added to the network. The system must verify well construction quality, screen integrity, and data representativeness before deploying expensive geophysical logging equipment. The required system shall include: individual downhole and side-view cameras with the side camera capable of full 360-degree rotation; a maximum diameter of 2 inches; a dedicated powered winch with a minimum 2000-foot cable length and cable management system to prevent skips or kinks; centralizers/centering bands for 4 and 6-inch diameter wells; a tripod or boom for camera deployment; and field-replaceable cablehead capability. The system must not require proprietary, subscription-based, or fee-based software to view and download collected data, and must be portable and movable by two-person field staff. The camera and cable must be easily cleanable, as the system will be used in wells with high salinity water. Delivery is required 30 days from award to USGS Virginia Water Science Center, 1730 East Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23228. Deliverables include the complete borehole camera system with downhole and side view components, 2000-foot powered winch, centralizer, and tripod.

SPECIFICATIONS

I. GENERAL INFORMATION

A. The USGS Virginia – West Virginia Water Science Center (VA-WV WSC) needs to replace their existing, but broken, borehole camera to ensure that the center can maintain that capability to investigate and evaluate the integrity of the 447 active groundwater wells our center collects groundwater level data from, as well as any wells that may be added to the network in the future for groundwater quality or level data collection.

B. Critical to any undertaking of groundwater data gathering is ensuring that the well being sampled for water level or quality data is providing the field staff with data that is representative of the aquifer in which it is screened. If a well cannot be confirmed to well connected to the intended aquifer, and only providing water from the intended aquifer, any data from that well cannot be trusted to be accurate. One of the most important tools for evaluating the integrity of a well is a borehole camera. This allows field staff to see down the entire length of a well to look for cracked casing, a clogged well screen, or other indicators that a well is no longer providing data representative of the intended aquifer. VA-WV WSC has had this capability for years with a borehole camera that recently succumbed to years of use investigating wells, many of which had water quality (salinity) that is not kind to any form of electronics. This camera was used in a statewide borehole project in West Virginia and on countless monitoring wells that were added to the network to ensure proper construction, as well as existing monitoring wells that were suspected to be providing poor quality data. Preserving this investigative capability is of critical importance to ensure that the groundwater data our center collects from the 447 active monitoring wells for which we publish data meet

USGS data quality standards

C. Defined terms:

a. portable: able to be used and carried several hundred feet by two field staff without the need for a vehicle or other assistive devices.

b. Powered winch: A winch or reel of cable that winds and unwinds the camera using an electric motor that can be powered by a generator, external, or internal rechargeable battery

c. Cablehead: the mechanism by which the camera connects to the cable which raises and lowers it down the well

D. The borehole camera is intended to be used to investigate the integrity of a well’s construction and screened interval/open hole as well to evaluate if it is safe to send more expensive and fragile borehole logging equipment down the well for collection of geophysical data.

II. Technical Specifications A. Requirements

1. VA-WV WSC would like to purchase a standalone borehole camera system that has a dedicated winch with a cable length of at least 2000 ft. The winch needs to have a cable management system to ensure smooth spooling and unspooling of the cable while in use. The system should be able to record images and video of monitoring wells using both side and downward facing cameras. The system should also have a tripod or boom to help with the lowering of the camera into a well. The camera should have a centralizer or other centering device to ensure the camera stays centered in the well. The system should allow for field staff to easily move camera images and videos off of the collection platform and onto a GFE laptop without the need for an internet connection or subscription or other fee-based software.

2. Criteria for acceptance of Product

a. The borehole camera system shall have individual cameras for down hole and side view purposes.

b. The camera shall have the ability to rotate the side camera a full 360º for the ability to view the entirety of the well with the side view camera.

c. The camera shall be no larger than 2 inches in diameter

d. The camera shall have a dedicated, powered winch with a cable length no shorter than 2000 feet.

e. The winch shall include a cable management system to prevent skips or kinks in the cable while spooling and unspooling the cable

f. The camera system shall include a centralizers/centering bands for wells 4 and 6 inches in diameter.

g. The camera system shall not require proprietary and/or subscription-based software to view and download the data collected by the camera system

h. The camera system should include a tripod or boom for lowering the camera into a well

i. The camera and cable shall be easy to clean after or during use

j. The winch shall be able to be moved by a two-person field staff

k. The camera system shall have the ability to repair/replace the cablehead in the field

B. Deliverables.

o Borehole camera with down hole and side view o 2000ft powered winch o Centralizer o tripod
