Rescue Swimmer Training Facility (RSTF) Turf Replacement USCG Aviation Technical Training Center (ATTC)
1664 Weeksville Road BLDG 3 Elizabeth City, NC 27909
1. BACKGROUND
The 3900 sf of artificial turf currently in place adjacent to the Rescue Swimmer Training Facility (RSTF) located in United States Coast Guard (USCG) Aviation Technical Training Center (ATTC) was installed in 2018 without any type of drainage system. During heavy rainfalls water pools up underneath the surface of the turf which has created multiple large and small potholes in the soil, making it very unstable in certain areas. The standing water has also caused the seams to become weak and the edges of the turf to peel up. Additionally, the short blades combined with no rubber fill causes the turf to get very hot in the summer months, which causes minor burning to exposed skin.
2. OBJECTIVE
This requirement is for the removal of existing artificial turf, the proper preparation of approximately 3900 sf of ground area and installation of 3900 sf of artificial turf. The turf located outside the RSTF is used by Aviation Swimmer Technicians (AST) students and Instructor daily to complete body weight movements without incurring injury that one would likely incur training on a hard surface. The turf is meant to absorb shock from impact while remaining stable. Our students and Instructors conduct a wide range of movements on the turf to include push-ups, sit-ups, flutter kicks, body weight squats, burpees, etc. The turf blades should remain cool in warmer weather, which keeps the students hands, knees and back from getting burned unlike concrete surfaces. Because of the large amounts of rain, the turf needs to be able to drain properly without eroding the undersoil which cause various size divots.
