About this file
This document is an exhibit titled "Exhibit Look & Feel" from the Kentucky Historical Society, detailing design guidelines for a historical exhibit about Kentucky's journey from revolution to statehood. The exhibit design principles focus on creating an engaging, accessible, and multifaceted museum experience that explores Kentucky's historical narrative through innovative visual storytelling. Key design strategies include using artifacts as focal points, creating vignettes that communicate historical context, utilizing juxtaposition to examine multiple interpretations of history, employing vivid and playful color schemes, and implementing universal design principles to accommodate all visitors.
The design approach emphasizes creating a modern take on historical presentation, with specific guidelines for object treatment, visual hierarchy, and graphic layout. The exhibit aims to balance simple and complex visuals, provide mental breaks for visitors, and ensure that historical information is accessible through multiple sensory and interpretive channels. Typography, color usage, and spatial design are carefully considered, with recommendations for text size at different viewing distances, negative space around artifacts, and graphic techniques that encourage visitor engagement and understanding of the historical narrative.

Hierarchy Major Theme This exhibit is thematic, and visitors should know and be reminded which major theme they’re exploring - when it starts and when it ends.
Object Artifacts are the center of attention, and the tone of their stories should be reflected in the graphic treatment. A considerable amount of negative space around objects should be used to draw focus.
Juxtaposition of Storytelling and Historical Facts The juxtaposition of storytelling and historical facts should be striking - ensuring visitors know what is being challenged and why. Data stories and other visuals -supporting objects, archival documents, etc - should be utilized whenever possible. Even if a visitor doesn’t read the label, they know what is being communicated.
People, Place, and Context For deeper learners; visitors can learn more about how these stories evolved by exploring the people telling them. Visitors should be able to relate to the humanity of these stories and feel empathy (when appropriate).
