About this file

This document is a comprehensive archival inventory spreadsheet detailing possible historical items and books for a 250 exhibit, compiled by the Kentucky Historical Society. The spreadsheet contains 57 potential archival items spanning from 1775 to 1954, focusing on Kentucky's early statehood, frontier history, and significant historical documents. The items include original manuscripts, letters, land deeds, militia collections, personal papers, maps, books, photographs, and other historical artifacts related to key figures and events in Kentucky's history such as Daniel Boone, the Kentucky Constitutional Convention, early settlements, Native American interactions, and the state's territorial period.

The document includes detailed metadata for each item, such as call numbers, years created, and descriptive notes, as well as recommendations for display methods (short-term, long-term, digital, or facsimile). Many items relate to themes of statehood, slavery, Native American relations, land surveys, and mythmaking about the Kentucky frontier. The collection provides rich primary source material covering topics like military service, land transactions, political correspondence, and early settler experiences. The spreadsheet also includes digital collection links, catalog references, and condition assessments for each potential exhibit item, suggesting careful curation and preservation considerations for historical documentation.

William Calk, His Journal, 1775 MSS 112 1775

On Monday, March 13, 1775, William Calk's party set out from Prince William County, Virginia, on a great land speculation in the frontier of "Caintuck." Perhaps they were attracted by Richard Henderson's advertisements for a new colony in Kentucky (though his Transylvania Company did not gain title to the land until March 17, 1775, when the treaty with the Cherokee was signed at Sycamore Shoals). Whatever their motives, Calk and his companions-Abraham Hanks (Abraham Lincoln's grandfather), Philip Drake, Enoch Smith, Robert Whitledge, and a number of slaves (whose names were not given)-set out from the valley of the Potomac, across the Blue Ridge Mountains, to the Powell River Valley, where they joined Richard Henderson's company near the Cumberland Gap on April 4, 1775. Harry Innes letter to John Brown, SC 621 1787 his collection consists of a letter written to John Brown by Harry Innes on December 7, 1787. The letter begins with Innes offering his congratulations to Brown on his recent appointment to the U.S. Senate. Innes offers his assistance with Brown's legal clients while Brown is away conducting congressional business. The letter then becomes dominated by a discussion of politics. Innes covers such topics as the U.S.

constitutional convention, Kentucky's pre-statehood political situation including navigation rights on the Mississippi River, and the Indian raids in the Kentucky District of Virginia. There is great importance placed on the political situation in the District of Kentucky and the navigation issue. He lists ten reasons why navigation rights should be granted to the United States. Innes hopes Brown "will be able to refute Mr. Jay's suggestion that the Western people had nothing yet to export and therefore the cession of the Mississippi would be no injury to them". Other political problems facing Kentucky and mentioned in this letter were: Kentucky constitutional conventions and revenue taxation

Richard Henderson and company land list SC 683 1798?

This document is a "list of Lands Divided between the original proprietors of Richard Henderson & Co their Heirs, Divisees, & assignees." The names of each original proprietor and the acreages assigned are listed. The company was better known as the Transylvania Land Company. In 1763, Richard Henderson, a prominent lawyer from Virginia, formed a land company to settle the area of Kentucky bounded by the Cumberland, Ohio, and Kentucky rivers. Notable explorers such as Daniel Boone were hired to scout the wilderness. In 1774, Henderson established the Louisa Company with Thomas Hart, William Johnston, John Williams, John Lutrell, and Nathaniel Hart. The company was again reorganized and named the Transylvania Company in January 1775. Later that same year, the company signed a treaty with the Cherokee at Sycamore Shoals on the Wautaga River in present-day Tennessee, thus securing Kentucky land south of the Ohio and west of the Kanawha River. Shortly after the Transylvania Company placed advertisements in Virginia and North Carolina newspapers, the settlement of Kentucky began.

Daniel Boone died on September 26, 1820, and was buried, as he requested, in Marysville Cemetery at Defiance, Missouri, next to his wife Rebecca. In early 1845, the Frankfort Cemetery Executive Committee voted to bring the remains of Daniel and Rebecca back to Kentucky to be reinterred at the new Frankfort Cemetery. The Missouri legislature agreed to the request if the cemetery obtained permission from the Boone family. Nathan Boone granted the request and in July of 1845 the Boones were removed to Kentucky.

The terms were considered by her to mean that Shelby was a poor white, but Roosevelt denied that is what was meant.

Isaac Shelby letter to Bennett Pemberton, SC 2205 1795

The war was from 1786-1794 and was fought between the United States and their allies, the Choctaw and Chickasaw and the British and their allies, the Northwestern Confederacy (which included people affiliated with the Cherokee, Iroquois, Lenape (Delaware), Miami, Odawa, Ojibwa, Potawatomi, Shawnee, Wabash Confederacy and Wyandot).
