RFP 693JJ320R000016 - Attachment J.11

Task Order Description

Tree Study

The objective of this Task Order was to evaluate trees of various size and species using testing and Finite Element modeling. Pendulum tests of different tree species and different diameter trunks were conducted at different speeds to develop a Finite Element model that could help determine how the trees of various diameter and height fare under MASH TL-1, TL-2, and TL-3 test conditions. In the future we loook to see verification of the model with crash-testing to give a better understanding of what guidance may be appropriate for landscaping practices and to develop criteria for when trees should be shielded with barrier.

Future Materials

This project used finite element modeling and testing to evaluate the feasibility of constructing rigid roadside barriers with alternative materials, evaluating variations of current barrier designs with new materials to reduce weight and impact forces without compromising safety. Barriers constructed out of Polymer concrete were crash tested and compared to traditional concrete barriers demonstrating the types of benefits that could result. Fiberglass-reinforced plastic is under consideration to explore its potential for guardrail posts, which could improve crash dynamics in a number of configurations.

Analyze Terrain Effects

The objective of this Task Order was to generate the data necessary to verify or update relationships for terrain effects on vehicle trajectories for the current vehicle fleet, assess the implications on crashworthiness requirements and/or highway design guidelines to promote enhanced safety. The study conducted full scale tests and vehicle dynamic simulations of vehicles traversing an array of medians.

DOS Anti-Ram Barriers

The objective of this Task Order was to conduct analyses, evaluations and testing to develop effective new anti-ram devices and to improve the performance of current designs. The purpose of these barriers is to protect against vehicular bomb threats by arresting the attacking vehicle at the greatest distance possible from critical infrastructure elements

Federal Lands Stone Faced Barrier

The objective of this Task Order was to crash test a stone faced concrete bridge rail that can be used as a parapet or median barrier in multiple Parks throughout the country. The crash test should be in accordance with AASHTO MASH requirements. In addition, this task order analyzed and designed a steel backed timber rail transition to directly tie into the stone faced concrete bridge rail using Finite Element (FE) models and crash simulations.
