About this file

This is a federal safety policy document (Revision #8, Effective 08/10/20) establishing procedures for radiation and laser safety operations under document number 75D-05.0-01.

The policy applies to employees working with ionizing radiation-producing equipment and Class 3B and Class 4 lasers. Key operational requirements include: maintaining ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) exposure levels, preventing laser radiation from exceeding maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits, and implementing comprehensive safety controls. All ionizing radiation equipment must include safety devices to prevent body entry into primary X-ray beam paths, warning devices for tube status, radiation symbol labeling, shutters, source housing, and generator cabinets. All lasers must have warning labels on housing and control panels, with engineering controls per ANSI Z136.1 standards; where specific controls are infeasible, administrative controls and personal protective equipment may substitute with OEHS review. Restricted areas must post "Caution Radiation Area" signage and maintain controlled radiation levels through shielding. Monthly radiation surveys are required with environmental dosimetry badges permanently positioned in X-ray equipment rooms. Personnel dosimetry badges must be worn by radiation workers at chest level (trunk) with ring dosimeters on the hand closest to the radiation source. Dose limits follow 29 CFR 1910.1096(b)(1) Table G-18, with whole body limits of 1.25 rems per calendar quarter and embryo/fetus exposure during pregnancy limited to 0.5 rem for the entire pregnancy. Offices using this equipment must notify OEHS before acquiring new equipment and provide quarterly personnel monitoring records. Training requirements mandate initial and annual refresher instruction on safety practices and standard operating procedures for all authorized equipment users.
