About this file
This document is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for water quality testing in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System. The procedure governs the testing, monitoring, and documentation of utility water and critical water used in medical device reprocessing to ensure compliance with infection prevention standards and patient safety requirements.
The SOP establishes distinct responsibilities between SPS technicians and Facility Management Service (FMS). SPS technicians conduct daily and weekly testing using specified equipment: Myron L. Company Ultrameter II meters (with serial numbers for Marion and Fort Wayne locations), Hach Total Hardness Test Strips, and pH/ORP sensor storage solution. Daily testing includes color and turbidity visual inspection, conductivity measurement, and temperature monitoring at multiple reprocessing locations (sinks, ultrasonic baths, cart washers, instrument washers, and automatic endoscope reprocessors). Weekly testing on the first day of the week includes pH and hardness measurements. Acceptance ranges for critical water are stricter than utility water: conductivity must be less than 10 µS/cm (versus 500 µS/cm for utility water), pH between 5-7 (versus 6-9), and hardness less than 1 ppm (versus 150 ppm). FMS, working with contracted vendors, is responsible for monthly and annual comprehensive water quality testing including bacteria, endotoxins, total organic carbon, and ionic contaminants, with monthly calibration of the Ultrameter II. All results are documented on the WEAS reporting website (www.weasreports.com), with failed results requiring immediate notification to supervisors and FMS investigation. The procedure references AAMI TIR 34:2017 and ANSI/AAMI ST 79:2017 standards, with temperature parameters specified for various detergent products across different equipment types documented in Attachment C.
