August 2023

PREPARED BY:

U.S. Fleet Forces – Code N46

Fleet Environmental Readiness Division 1562 Mitscher Ave.

Norfolk, Virginia 23551‐248

I. BACKGROUND

The primary mission of the United States Navy (USN) is to maintain, train, and equip combat‐ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression, and maintaining freedom of the seas.

While fulfilling its primary mission, the Navy maintains a deep commitment to environmental compliance and stewardship. United States Fleet Forces Command (USFF) invests a significant amount of funding and support to maintain environmental compliance. USFF has developed an environmental compliance and stewardship outreach program with the goal of fostering positive awareness of and support for the Navy’s primary mission and associated environmental compliance efforts.

USFF developed the U.S. Navy “Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment” stationary environmental outreach exhibit to educate the public about marine species monitoring efforts, at‐sea waste processing, and protective measures implemented during naval training and testing activities. The stationary exhibit was finalized in 2014 and is located at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum located in Nauticus in Norfolk, Virginia. USFF is developing planned upgrades to the stationary exhibit in order to make it more user‐friendly, update content to most current information available, and replace broken or ineffective systems.
