SECURITY AND BIOSAFETY TRAINING
For Laboratory Subcontractors & Visitors/Vendors
Due to the nature of the infectious agents handled in the Arizona State Laboratory, visitors/vendors must be alerted to the dangers associated with these biological agents. Special precautions must be taken to avoid infection or injury while visiting laboratory areas in the building. In addition, visitors/vendors must also be informed of the need for increased security in the building, which is required to reduce the potential for accidental injuries or unintentional release of these infectious biological agents.
Laboratory Security All visitors/vendors must sign in at the front desk and obtain a Visitors/Vendors Badge.
Sign-in must include the Date, Name (visitor), Escort Name, Destination, and Time-in.
Visitors/vendors must be escorted by a laboratory employee at all times while they are in the building.
Unauthorized photography is strictly prohibited. This includes photography or video recording of any type including but not limited to cellular telephones, and digital cameras.
Access to the Biosafety Level 3 Laboratories is limited to only those occasions where there is a justified need for entry, visit times must be kept to a minimum, and visitors/vendors must be escorted throughout their duration in the Biosafety Level 3 Laboratories.
All visitors/vendors must return their badges and sign-out after completion of their visit.
Biosafety Laboratory testing involves handling of infectious materials with the potential for infections with serious, life threatening illnesses.
Diseases can be spread through skin contact through open lesions or wounds, or through infectious aerosols and airborne particles.
Subcontractors must use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, such as gloves when cleaning and handling trash removal.
Subcontractors must not enter any BSL-3 laboratory without escort of a laboratory employee.
Visitors/vendors and subcontractors may not enter a BSL-3 laboratory when there is any testing in progress, unless they have been trained in the testing techniques being applied.
Laboratory equipment being removed for service or repair must be properly decontaminated before it can leave the laboratory area.
Agent specific signs and symptoms could include any of the following: fever, malaise, fatigue, profuse sweating, headache, muscle/back pain, rigors, confusion, stupor, jaundice, diarrhea, evidence of renal and liver impairment, abscesses, weight loss, cough, skin ulcers, swollen and painful lymph glands, inflamed eyes, sore throat, pneumonia, chills, joint pain, weakness, chest pain, bloody sputum and abdominal pain. Should these signs and symptoms develop, visitors should immediately seek medical treatment and notify their physician of their visit to the State Laboratory.
Incident Response You will be accompanied at all times by a laboratory staff member. In the event of an incident, the accompanying staff member will instruct you on proper response actions. Follow their instructions.
In the event that it is necessary to evacuate the laboratory, follow your accompanying staff member to the emergency staging area.
Do not use the elevators during an evacuation, use only the stairs located on the east and west sides of the building.
A rapid evacuation may require that you leave the BSL3 lab without doffing PPE. If it is necessary for you to do so, follow your accompanying staff member’s instructions for proper decontamination procedures once you are outside of the building.
