About this file

The document is a Detailed Unit Information and Specifications document for Spring 2024 Tree Planting, prepared by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) Southwest Land Office (SWLO). The document outlines specifications for three separate planting units across two projects: the Beavertail project (180 acres near Clinton, MT) and the Corley Gulch project (134 acres near Victor, MT). The planting involves 57,300 Ponderosa Pine (PP) seedlings at the Beavertail site and 26,000 total seedlings (18,200 PP and 7,800 Western Larch) at the Corley Gulch site. Both projects require specific planting methodologies, including 12'x12' or 15'x15' spacing, 12" scalping, and prioritizing seedling placement on the northwest side of stumps or coarse woody debris.

Access to these planting units will require 4x4 vehicles due to potential poor road conditions, with routes involving county, forest, and spur roads. The Beavertail project is located within a fire scar from 2000 with previous low survival rates, while the Corley Gulch site was harvested in 2017 using ground-based equipment. Both sites have specific environmental considerations, such as moderate brush and grass presence, and requirements to plant outside the dripline of residual overstory. The planting is part of reforestation efforts following timber harvests and fire damage, with careful attention to spacing, seedling survival, and forest regeneration strategies.

DETAILED UNIT INFORMATION AND SPECIFICATIONS

Spring 2024 Planting

UNIT OFFICE: Missoula (MSO)

TOTAL ACRES: 180

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Beavertail project is approximately 8 air miles east of Clinton, MT. The Wallace Cramer project is approximately 3 air miles north of Clinton, MT. Please see attached maps for locations.

ACCESS:

The planting units can be accessed via county roads, forest roads, and spur roads. Due to the possibility of poor road conditions the use of 4x4 vehicles may be required for travel over non-surfaced roads to access units.

PLANTING CONDITIONS:

Beavertail: The Beavertail planting unit is an approximately 180-acre planting unit located within the Ryan fire scar of 2000. The unit was previously planted in the spring of 2015 with very low survival rates. Little to no scarification of the residual shrubs and grasses is expected to remain from the fire scar. Moderate amounts of brush and grass are expected within the unit(s). 57,300 PP seedlings will be planted within the unit. Seedlings will be planted to a 12’x12’ spacing, as well as spaced off any surviving seedlings from the 2015 plant or any advanced regeneration. 12”x12” scalping will be required. The Forest Officer will require seedlings to be planted on the NW side of any stumps or coarse woody debris (CWD) where available. Planting on the NW side of any stump or CWD will take priority over spacing.

Wallace Cramer: The Wallace Cramer planting unit was harvested by the Wallace Cramer timber sale in the summer/fall of 2018. The post-harvest stand consists of a in overstory averaging 50-60' spacing with little to no advanced regeneration.

Any scarification of the residual grasses that occurred during harvest has since been reseeded. Low amounts of brush and slash are expected within the unit(s). 29,7000 PP seedlings will be planted to a 12’x12’ spacing outside of the dripline of the residual overstory. 12” x 12” scalping will be required. The Forest Officer will require seedlings to be planted on the NW side of post-harvest stumps or coarse woody debris (CWD) where available. Planting on the NW side of any stump or CWD will take priority over spacing.

Spring 2024 Planting

UNIT OFFICE: Hamilton (HAM)

TOTAL ACRES: 134

PROJECT LOCATION:

The Corley Gulch project is approximately 11 air miles east of Victor, MT. Please see attached maps for locations.

ACCESS:

The planting units can be accessed via Middle Burnt Fork Rd to Corley Gulch Rd. Access up Corley Gulch road is an easement through private ground. There is a green brush gate at the bottom of Corley Gulch road to access through. Due to the possibility of poor road conditions the use of 4x4 vehicles may be required for travel over non-surfaced roads to access units.

PLANTING CONDITIONS:

Corley Gulch: The Corley Gulch planting units were harvested by the Corley Gulch timber sale in 2017. The timber sale was harvested using ground-based (hotsaw and skidder) equipment. Moderate scarification of the residual grasses is expected.

Low amounts of brush and slash are expected within the unit(s). 18,200 PP seedlings will be planted on the north, south, and east aspects and 7,800 WL seedings on the north and east aspects. Seedlings will be planted to a 15’x15’ spacing outside of the dripline of the residual overstory as well as spaced off advanced regeneration. Forest Officer will require seedlings to be planted on the NW side of post-harvest stumps and downed logs where available.
