About this file

This file is an Attachment D containing Special Project Specifications (SPS) for a road reconstruction project, establishing the coordination hierarchy and technical requirements for aggregate materials used in surface course applications.

The document establishes that contract documents are binding in the following order of precedence: Special Project Specifications (SPS), Plans, Forest Service Supplemental Specifications (FSSS), and Standard Specifications (FP-24), with calculated dimensions governing over scaled dimensions in cases of discrepancy. The SPS contains detailed specifications for R3-G Forest Service Aggregate, requiring surface course aggregate to consist of hard, durable particles of crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed gravel meeting specific performance standards. Key material requirements include Los Angeles abrasion testing (AASHTO T 96) with a maximum of 35 percent loss, soundness of aggregate testing (AASHTO T 104) with 12 percent maximum loss for both coarse and fine aggregate over five cycles, durability index testing (AASHTO T 210) with a minimum of 35 for both coarse and fine aggregate, and fractured face requirements (AASHTO T 335) of 75 percent minimum with one or more fractured faces. The specification includes a detailed gradation table for surface course materials with sieve size requirements ranging from 1 inch (100 percent passing) to No. 200 (8-18 percent passing), and establishes plasticity index limits of 4-10, with provisions allowing for the addition of 2 percent imported bentonite if the plasticity index falls below 4.

ATTACHMENT D

104(SPS) – Coordination of Contract Documents Add the following to Subsection 104.07 Coordination of Contract Documents:

Special Project Specifications (SPS), plans, Forest Service Supplemental Specifications (FSSS), and Standard Specifications (FP-24) are contract documents. A requirement in one document is binding as though occurring in all the contract documents. The contract documents are intended to be complementary and to describe and provide for a complete contract. In case of discrepancy, calculated and shown dimensions govern over scaled dimensions. The contract documents govern in the following order:

(a) SPS

(b) Plans

(c) FSSS; and

(d) Standard Specifications (FP-24)

703(SPS) – R3-G Forest Service Aggregate Delete 703.05 and replace with the following:

703.05 Surface Course Aggregate

(a) General. Provide hard, durable particles or fragments of crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed gravel conforming to the following:

(b) Fine aggregate12 percent loss maximum
(4) Durability index (coarse), AASHTO T 21035 minimum
(5) Durability index (fine), AASHTO T 21035 minimum
(6) Fractured faces, AASHTO T 335 (one or more)75 percent minimum

(7) Without organic matter and lumps or balls of clay.
