About this file
This is a design analysis report prepared by the Kentucky Department of Transportation, District 5, for an overheight detection structure in Jefferson County, Louisville. The project involves the structural analysis and design of a signal pole assembly with two 35-foot mast arms positioned at different alignments (0 degrees and 90 degrees) mounted at a height of 19 feet on a 21.5-foot vertical pole. The analysis was conducted using AASHTO 6th Edition (2013) standards and accounts for environmental factors including a basic wind speed of 90 mph, wind importance factor of 0.87, and a gust effect factor of 1.14. The pole structure is designed to support custom arm attachments weighing 500 pounds each with dimensions of 102.3 inches in length and 36 inches in width, positioned 30 feet from the pole base.
The design analysis determined maximum structural loads for Pole A, including a maximum axial load of 5,542.65 pounds, maximum shear of 1,610.98 pounds, and a calculated moment of 71.49 kip-feet with zero torsion. The foundation design specifies a 36-inch diameter foundation with 12.5 feet of soil depth and 6 feet of rock depth, requiring a total volume of 3.3 cubic yards of soil and 1.6 cubic yards of rock. Vertical reinforcement consists of thirteen number 8 bars with number 4 ties at 12-inch pitch spacing. The analysis was completed on July 22, 2021, with the disclaimer that these calculations were developed by Florence and Hutcheson, Inc., and require verification by professionally qualified personnel before application.
