About this file
This is a structural design analysis document for an over-height detection system prepared by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 5, for Jefferson County in Louisville. The project involves the design and analysis of a 21.50-foot vertical pole (Pole A) with two mast arms extending 35 feet in length at a height of 19 feet, along with associated luminaire arms and custom attachments. The over-height detection equipment attachment measures 102.3 inches in length and 36.0 inches in width with a 2.3-inch thickness and weighs 500 pounds. The analysis was completed on July 22, 2021, using AASHTO 6th Edition (2013) standards with a basic wind speed of 90 mph and an importance factor of 0.87.
The structural design calculations indicate maximum axial loads of 5,542.65 pounds, maximum shear of 1,610.98 pounds, and a calculated moment of 71.49 k-ft for Pole A. The foundation design specifies a 36-inch diameter foundation with 12.5 feet of soil volume (3.3 cubic yards) and 6.0 feet of rock volume (1.6 cubic yards) at level ground with a 2:1 slope condition. Vertical reinforcement consists of #8 bars (13 total) with #4 spiral ties at 12-inch pitch. The analysis was performed by Ted Swansegar of the Kentucky Department of Transportation and is based on program calculations developed by Florence and Hutcheson, Inc.
