About this file
This document is a detailed wayside exhibit proposal for Catoctin Mountain Park, prepared by Sea Reach Ltd in February 2024. The proposal outlines a comprehensive plan for redesigning and upgrading 41 wayside exhibits throughout the park, including welcome panels, trailhead information, and interpretive exhibits focusing on topics such as local wildlife, forest ecology, historical activities like charcoal production and sawmilling, and park conservation efforts. Each proposed exhibit is meticulously documented with specific details including size (typically 36" x 24" or 36" x 48"), material (double-sided aluminum), color (NPS brown), mounting style, and precise geographic location within the park.
The proposal is closely related to a federal contract opportunity (Solicitation Number: 140P2125R0068) for "HAFC CATO WAYSIDE FABRICATION" issued by the Department of the Interior National Park Service. The exhibits are designed to enhance visitor understanding of the park's natural and cultural history, with recommendations for improved accessibility, updated graphics, and more engaging interpretive content. Key design elements include standardized map layouts, QR codes for app downloads, historical photographs, illustrations, and thematic focuses on topics like forest diversity, invasive species management, and the park's historical landscape transformations.

Do You See Our Pollinators?
In order to produce seeds, pollen must travel from a flower’s male part (stamen) to its female part (stigma). Some plants are self-pollinating and some are fertilized by pollen that is carried by wind or water. Many flowers are pollinated by insects and animals such as bees, wasps, moths, butterflies, birds, flies, and bats. Watch for these helpful pollinators.
Take only pictures!
Do not pick flowers or bother pollinators.

Look around. Do you see dead vegetation? In the warmer months, this garden is full of colorful flowers. Currently, it may not be the prettiest, but it serves many important purposes. During the winter months, this garden provides shelter and food to insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Right now, this garden is actually full of life. The standing dead vegetation and unraked leaves will help many species survive the winter.
Is the Garden Really Dead?
Chipmunks go into torpor, waking up every few days to snack on the seeds the dead vegetation provides.
Carolina chickadees and other nonmigratory birds forage for seeds and insects under the safe cover of the dead vegetation.
Insects in different life stages overwinter in the garden. Bumble bees spend their winters underground during their adult stage. Toads hibernate under loose soil, insulated by the unraked leaves that were left to be covered with snow.

| • | Produce the exhibit in aluminum (double sided) to match the other Park waysides. |
| • | Redesign exhibit to be more thematic. Content could address that this is a spring- |
fed mountain stream and should focus on the significance of water—“Water is the life force of the mountain”. Brook trout is not appropriate here anymore.
Note
• Book trout populations in eastern US have been greatly reduced. Catoctin has one of the few remaining naturally reproducing Brook Trout populations in the area (Owens Creek). Big Hunting no longer contains Brook Trout, but it did back in the early 2000’s. Brook Trout were present and reproducing in this stream until about 2014 and are now no longer present. The warming climate increased water temperatures and more extreme spring rain events washed the trout eggs downstream. At that time, the box culvert/bridge to the visitor center gravel lot prevented Brook Trout from getting back upstream after they had washed downstream.

| • | Produce the exhibit in aluminum (double sided) to match the other Park waysides. |
| • | Update text: Ahead there is an example of a whiskey still, you can hear the spring fed |
stream bubbling nearby. Farms were failing, the price for corn was woefully low, but corn could go to making whiskey and the whiskey could be shipped to DC, Baltimore, and as far away as New York City. Whiskey was shipped in barrels at a much better price than the corn was going for. . . Provide visitors with a sense of the value of a whiskey barrel in todays dollars. Incorporate prices that are listed on the existing sign. The still had clean water and it was hidden between two mountain ranges, while still being close to the corn fields.
Note
• Add a note stating this is not a replica. “Ahead, you will find an exhibit interpreting an example of a whiskey still that you might find at a family farm in the eighteenth century, when making whiskey was legal”.

Note
• Throughout the exhibits, we will need to include, upfront, the fact that between the late 18th and early 19th century Catoctin Iron Furnace used enslaved black colliers, teamsters, and woodcutters in charcoal-making. At Catoctin Furnace, prior to the Civil War, they gradually replaced enslaved labor with wage labor. There is one known historical photograph from 1906 of a man named Joseph Johns, who escaped slavery in Virginia and ultimately worked as a collier (for wages) on Blue Mountain in Union Township, PA (use rights TBD).
• Next year, the Park will be initiating a project that includes a historical context of the people who were enslaved by and worked for Catoctin Furnace within what is now Catoctin Mountain Park for the purposes of producing charcoal to fuel the furnace.

T H U M B N A I LSubject: Wood Hauler’s Sled
Size: 36” x 24” Material: Double sided aluminum
Purpose This exhibit accompanies a recreation of a wood hauler’s sled. The text explains the use of horses or mules to pull wood haulers to the charcoal hearth.
Graphics
• Historic image of a wood hauler’s sled or illustration.
Recommendations
| • | Upgrade size of exhibit to the standard 36”x24” size. |
| • | Change the paint color to NPS brown to match the other Park waysides. |
| • | Produce the exhibit in aluminum (double sided) to match the other Park waysides. |
| • | Relocate exhibit at the other end of the sled so that it’s more easily accessed by |
visitors.
• The content is acceptable, however the current image on the exhibit (an historic photo) is dark and not very crisp. Either use a historic image of a wood haulers sled, if one can be found that is generic enough, or create an illustration.
Note
• The example of the sled that is currently in place (it is not a “replica.” It is a design that volunteers came up with around 1983 that was different from the original exhibit that more accurately reflected the period) is not an accurate representation of what was historically used during the time period—no historical photograph will match what is currently on site.
