About this file
This is a Statement of Objectives (SOO) and Bill of Materials for a customized potting centrifuge required by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The requirement seeks one potting centrifuge unit with a due date of August 6, 2026. The NAICS code is 333248 (Other Industrial Machinery Manufacturing) with a standard business size threshold of 750 employees. The requirement identifier is PR480693, prepared by Jacob Spradley (spradleyjv@ornl.gov) with TPO Syed Islam.
The centrifuge must accommodate membrane modules mounted vertically in custom holders on rotating arm ends, with maximum module lengths of 120 cm for single modules and 60 cm when two modules are used simultaneously. Maximum module diameter is 6 inches (DN150) with a minimum diameter of approximately 1 inch. Key operational specifications include a maximum rotational speed of 400 RPM, PLC-based control with touchscreen interface for temperature, centrifuge time, rotational speed, and acceleration/deceleration management, and imbalance detection with automatic alarm capability. The chamber must feature a stainless steel round design, air heating capability up to 80°C with fresh air inlet and ventilation system outlet, thermal insulation for safety, and operation compatibility with standard power supply and environmental conditions of 20-24°C with humidity below 60 percent. The rotating arm must return to a horizontal position after operation for easy module mounting and demounting. Two integrated bag holders are required on the rotating arm for adhesive system storage prior to potting.

1 - Membrane modules should be mounted in custom holders on the rotating arm ends and are centrifuged vertically. Module clamps can be flexible.
2 - The maximum length for one membrane module centered in the middle of the rotation arm, is desired approximately 120 cm.
3 - The maximum length for a membrane module desired when two modules are used simultaneously is approximately 60 cm.
4 - Maximum module diameter up to 6” (DN150), depending on exact module geometry. Smallest module diameter is approximately 1”.
5 - Two bag holders integrated on the rotating arm to store the adhesive system prior to potting.
6 - The rotating speed has to be a maximum of 400 RPM.
7 - Control by means of a PLC with touchscreen for control of temperature, centrifuge time, rotational speed and acceleration / deceleration needed.
8 - The potting centrifuge needs to be protected against imbalance with an alarm that can go off when the machine stops in case of imbalance (and before the centrifuge end time is reached) 9 - After rotating, the arm should stops in in horizontal position for easy mounting and demounting of membrane modules 10 - Round shaped centrifuge chamber made from stainless steel is prefrred for easy inside cleaning 11 - The centrifuge chamber could be air heated up to a maximum temperature of 80°C. Fresh air inlet is needed, and the air outlet of the chamber should be connected to a ventilation system.
12 - The chamber should be thermally isolated on the outside for security reasons.
13 - Should be compatible with standard power supply 14 - Should be compatible to work in an environmental with 20 - 24°C and humidity <60%.
