Appendix 1: ACRONYMS AND DEFINITIONS

FedRAMP - The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) is a government-wide program that provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services. FedRAMP enables Agencies to rapidly adapt from old, insecure legacy IT to mission-enabling, secure, and cost effective cloud-based IT. FedRAMP created and manages a core set of processes to ensure effective, repeatable cloud security for the government. FedRAMP established a mature marketplace to increase utilization and familiarity with cloud services while facilitating collaboration across government through open exchanges of lessons learned, use cases, and tactical solutions.

FIPS - Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) are publicly announced standards developed by the United States federal government for use in computer systems by non-military government agencies and government contractors. FIPS standards are issued to establish requirements for various purposes such as ensuring computer security and interoperability and are intended for cases in which suitable industry standards do not already exist. Many FIPS specifications are modified versions of standards used in the technical communities, such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

OMAS - The Office Mail Accounting System (OMAS) is an accounting and payment method for postage provided by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The system allows federal agencies to pay (monthly) for specific postage usage based on a yearly usage estimate derived from historical data and previous fiscal year usage.

IMI - Intelligent Mail® Indicia (IMI) are used to indicate postage payment. Postage evidencing systems allow customers print indicia directly on a mailpiece or on a label that is affixed to a mailpiece. Indicia are comprised of human-readable information and contain machine-readable information that identifies the postage evidencing system, postage payment information, and mail service requested. The USPS® now requires that all new mailing systems meet the new Intelligent Mail Indicia (IMI) standards as the mailing systems go to market. It provides more transparent and detailed transaction data, enables automation of costly back-office operations, and employs better security standards. Benefits of the new IMI standards include accurate postage, stronger security, automatic updates, and greater connectivity. The new IMI captures more data, provides the USPS with more real-time data, and ensures that you always use the correct amount of postage.

IMpb - Intelligent Mail® Package Barcode (IMpb) or unique tracking barcode is required for all parcels shipped through the United States Postal Service (USPS). IMpb includes the routing information in the barcode which allows the USPS to use automated equipment to sort and track packages as they travel through USPS network to the post offices that will make final delivery at the respective destinations. The electronic information and intelligent barcode allow the USPS to project workload and resources before and during the packages’ journey through our network.

LPM – Lines Per Minute: The measure of the speed of a printer.
