Parkwide National Park Service | Harpers Ferry Center | February 2021
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park W A Y S I D E E X H I B I T P R O P O S A L
Attachment B, Proposal
This is for reference only of general location and ground conditions. Exact locations may have changed. All locations are to be verified before installation.
Introduction
A starter wayside exhibit proposal was prepared by Harpers Ferry Center based on a site visit in April 2019. Subsequently, Pannier Graphics was awarded a contract to plan, design, fabricate, and audio describe wayside exhibits based on the starter proposal.
The planned site visit by the Pannier team was canceled due to the Covid pandemic. A creative alternative was devised to continue with a virtual approach. The San Antonio NHP staff provided video documentation and commentary of all the proposed wayside locations. The project team reviewed the material and collaborated on several virtual conferences during July and August, 2020.
The story of San Antonio Mission NHP will be presented as a complex interweaving and fusion of people and cultures.
This unique blend of culture still evident today.
Existing art will be used to the fullest extent possible. Some details, such as the inaccurate depiction of native clothing will be modified where possible to indicate natural unbleached linen. To complement the Junior Ranger Program, references to children will be incorporated where appropriate.
Panel Material All panels shall be gel coated fiberglass.
Bases All existing bases shall be replaced with NPS painted aluminum, NPS Brown.
Accessibility Standards The following standards have been developed for wayside exhibit accessibility. These standards should be foremost in mind when developing wayside exhibits and the sites at which they will be installed. As far as possible, every attempt should be made to address and meet these standards.
The National Park Service should strive to make outdoor interpretive exhibits accessible to all potential users. Wayside exhibits should be planned, designed, fabricated, and installed in a manner consistent with the following goals. Standards and specifications used to ensure that these goals are met include:
- Director’s Order #42
- Principles of Universal Design
- NPS Wayside Exhibit Map Standards
- NPS Wayside Exhibit Typographic Standards
- Americans with Disabilities Act and Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility guidelines
For Visitors with Mobility Impairments Wayside exhibits will be installed at accessible locations wherever possible. For the exhibits that are not in an accessible area, the interpretation will be provided elsewhere in the park.
Wayside exhibit panels will be installed at heights and angles favorable to viewing by all visitors, including wheelchair users.
For standard NPS low profile exhibits the recommended height is 32” from the bottom of the exhibit frame to finished grade; for upright exhibits and bulletin boards the height is 24” to 28” from the bottom of the exhibit frame to finished grade, depending on panel size.
Orientation exhibits will include accessibility advisory information.
Wayside exhibits will have level, hard surface areas in front of exhibit.
Exhibit sites will offer clear, unrestricted views of park features referred to in the exhibits.
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Introduction cont. Page $2
In addition, the park should consider posting wayside content (excluding copyright material) on the park’s website. As a final deliverable, the contractor shall provide PDF’s that meet accessibility standards.
For Visitors with Visual Impairments Exhibit typography will be legible and readable, according with the NPS Wayside Exhibit Typographic Standards.
Panel colors will be selected to reduce eyestrain and glare and to provide excellent readability under field conditions. Because of its reflectivity, white will not be used as a background color.
Five wayside exhibits will incorporate tactile elements.
For Visitors with Hearing Impairments Wayside exhibit panels will communicate visually and will rely heavily on graphics to interpret park resources.
For Visitors with Learning Impairments Topics for wayside exhibits will be specific and of general interest. Unnecessary complexity will be avoided. Information will be presented in a clear hierarchical manner.
Easy-to-understand graphics will be used to convey ideas, rather than long text.
Unfamiliar expressions, technical terms, and jargon will be avoided. Pronunciation aids and definitions be be provided where needed.
Text will be concise and free of long paragraphs and wordy language. Most text will be within 8th grade readability level.
Comprehensive Planning Wayside exhibit planning begins with comprehensive parkwide interpretive planning. Early recognition of, and sensitivity to, accessibility issues will result in the most successful waysides.

Notes
The 2019 Concepcion HSR identifies the majority of the walls that we see today in this ruin as being rebuilt ca 1870 (p.40). The refectory was on the east side of the kitchen where we now have the porcelain panels. I'm not sure why the window was placed in the wall in 1870 but probably wasn't a food distribution window like the illustration shows. The original walls for this section do date to the 1750s.

Notes
Other potential frescoes-- the potted plants on the north wall of the library room. These designs have also been identified at the Alamo and provide additional evidence that the same master craftsmen worked at both sites. Refer to soot - not candle soot much of the soot was probably from post-colonial fires in the buildings.

Notes
The room in the foreground is identified by OVM and the HSR as the refectory and the 2nd room as the kitchen. The drawing is a little misleading because it makes it look like there weren't other rooms in the foreground, it makes it look like there was just the refectory/kitchen and the corridor, the drawings also don't capture the vaulted roof which is a defining charcteristic of the architectural style.

Notes
Remove chandelier, possibly include sconces, niche stations of the cross. Possibly include Saint statues in front corners.
What time period is this image supposed to capture? If it is supposed to capture colonial times, the chandelier should be eliminated, the stations of the cross would be different and the light sconces as well. The 1759 and 1772 inventories will give a better description of what the inside looked like. It should also capture the painted plasters that are not in the current church if that is the era they are going for - the saints in the dome (the exact artistry would be speculative but I think forgivable in this instance).

Smoky, smelly place. Children do chores. Older boys off to ranch. The placement of this wayside is such that it should interpret the low capped walls in front of it. I think that our interpretation of these as workshop ruins is incorrect or at least not based on any evidence at this time. Jake Ivey thinks that these particular ruins are the casa reales (prefecture) described in the 1759 document.

Small section of fresco installed on side of church c. 1950. We don't know exactly what or where the graveyard was. Jake Ivey has speculated at one time that it was on the north side of the church. Most of the burials were probably inside of the church. Hopefully research this coming summer will tell us more. What we do know is that they wouldn't have been in neat rows with crosses like the current graphics. (look at how the burials were found at San Juan).

To tie in the religious story of the missions: wheat was also important as the necessary ingredient for communion wafers.
wheat was not a staple of food for the missions. Most had to be imported, did not grow well here.
The mill is a "luxury" addition to the San Jose compound and may even reflect the changing demographics of San Jose as it was partially secularized in 1794 when the mill opened.
