About this file

This attachment outlines hazardous waste disposal guidelines for Springfield Hospital Center in Maryland, specifically detailing the contents and management of RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) regulated pharmaceutical waste containers. The document specifies that P-listed pharmaceuticals, including wasted Warfarin tablets, and D-listed pharmaceuticals such as partially used Insulin vials/pens, Neomycin/polymyxin B/Hydrocortisone otic suspensions, Selenium shampoo, Silver sulfadiazine cream, and Erythromycin topical solution must be disposed of in designated RCRA black boxes. Empty containers, defined as those from which all removable product has been extracted using standard methods including pouring, pumping, or aspirating, may be disposed of as regular trash. The document was updated in April 2022 and includes a field for dating when new black boxes are placed into service, with a note that boxes should be removed after one year of use.

This disposal guidance document is part of Springfield Hospital Center's broader pharmaceutical hazardous waste management program, which is supported by a three-year state and local contract opportunity running from 2026 through 2029 for special (regulated) medical waste and pharmaceutical hazardous drug waste pickup and disposal services on both regular and as-needed bases.
