About this file
This is a Standard Specifications document issued by the Michigan Department of Transportation Bureau of Highways, dated October 8, 2013, establishing gradation requirements for Ice Control Sand. The specification defines the material requirements for ice control sand used in highway maintenance operations. The sand must be natural sand, manufactured fine aggregate, or a uniformly graded blend consisting of fine, clean, hard, durable, and uncoated particles free from clay lumps and soft or flaky granular material. The material is measured and paid for by the ton, with weight slips required to accompany each load.
The specification establishes strict gradation requirements through sieve analysis testing, with materials required to pass 100 percent through a 3/8-inch sieve, 95-100 percent through a #4 sieve, 65-90 percent through a #8 sieve, 20-65 percent through a #30 sieve, and 0-5 percent through a #200 sieve. Moisture content shall not exceed 6 percent, with loads exceeding this threshold subject to penalties in accordance with Section 109.01A of the Michigan Department of Transportation 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction. No pricing, award dates, contract terms, or renewal options are specified in this standards document, as it serves as a technical specification for material acceptance and quality control rather than a procurement solicitation.
