FXI and ISR Mirror Bender Upgrade Package Statement of Work and Technical Specifications Summary
This Statement of Work (SOW) dated March 26, 2026, establishes the requirements for designing, manufacturing, installing, and testing mirror bender upgrades for two beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The contractor shall deliver one Collimating Mirror (CM) Bender System and one Toroidal Mirror (TM) Bender System for the FXI beamline, plus one Horizontal Focusing Mirror (HFM) Bender with in-vacuum double piping cooling lines and one Vertical Focusing Mirror (VFM) Bender for the ISR beamline. These systems will replace existing piezo-based bender systems with stepper-motor-controlled designs while maintaining identical motion performance in travel range, resolution, accuracy, and repeatability. All components must operate in ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) environments with base pressure below 10⁻⁸ mbar, be radiation resistant, comply with ASME B31.3 piping standards, and meet NFPA70 electrical standards with certification by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).
The contractor is responsible for final design review deliverables at 8 weeks post-award, equipment delivery at 32 weeks, and complete installation and testing at BNL by 38 weeks. All in-UHV assemblies must be cleaned and baked prior to delivery, with baking temperatures of 150°C without encoders or 120°C with encoders. Specific technical requirements include vibrational stability below 1.0 microradians in the 4-100 Hz range for FXI mirrors, bend radius ranges from infinity to 5 kilometers with actuator resolution of 0.2 percent, and HFM cooling systems designed for leak and over-pressure testing. The contractor must provide comprehensive factory acceptance testing and site acceptance testing, supply one spare motor and encoder of each type used, provide a two-year warranty against failure and defects, follow BNL Quality Assurance requirements per form BNL-QA-101, obtain Job Hazard Analysis approval prior to work commencement, and furnish all necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.

3. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
3.1 Scope of Supply:
This section describes the requirements for the mirror benders upgrade.
The scope of supply includes:
• One (1) FXI Collimating Mirror (CM) Bender System
• One (1) FXI Toroidal Mirror Bender (TM) System
• One (1) ISR Horizontal Focusing Mirror (HFM) Bender and in-vacuum, double piping, metal cooling lines for existing mirror substrate
• One (1) ISR Vertical Focusing Mirror (VFM) Bender
• Cables in ultra-high-vacuum and high X-ray radiation environment from component to feedthroughs
The scope of supply excludes:

The mirror benders shall be designed to fit into existing mirror systems already installed at BNL. The overall mirror dimensions are provided in the specific bender specifications. Interfacing details to the mirror systems will be provided by BNL to the Contractor one (1) week after the contract is awarded.
The Contractor shall design, manufacture, install, and test stepper-motors to control the tangential bending of the CM/TM mirror units at the FXI Beamline and HFM/VFM mirror units at ISR Beamline, replacing the currently used piezo-based bender systems. The new configuration shall not alter any motion performance in terms of travel range, resolution, accuracy, and repeatability; also, it shall provide a locking position functionality when the motor is de-energized, setting it at the last/closest full step position. The mirror bender design shall include provisions for ensuring the mirror is not damaged during bending actuation.
The motors shall be shielded from radiation with a 2 mm stainless steel plate . Cables from the motors and feedthroughs shall be provided for the in-vacuum section, as well as the feedthroughs themselves. Cables shall be radiation resistant or shielded from radiation. An additional double TC Type K feedthrough shall be provided (for the motors’ temperature) and the connection in UHV shall be prepared. All in-UHV assemblies shall be UHV-conditioned (UHV cleaned and baked) before delivery.
In-air cables for motors, encoders, and limit switches shall be prepared for wiring up to the pre-existing breakout box.
One or two additional interface boxes, replacing the pre-existing one(s), shall be prepared for accepting inputs from the respective motor and limit switches, and for outputs from the BNL standard connectors
(see NSLSII-CRL-RSI-001).
During the motor installation process at NSLS-II, functional testing of the bender stages shall be performed to ensure the proper functioning of both mechanisms and compliance with specifications.
