About this file

This is a Scope of Work document for a federal procurement of a 1030 nm femtosecond fiber laser system by Brookhaven National Laboratory (Requisition No. 0000475610).

BNL seeks to procure one industrial-grade 1030 nm femtosecond fiber laser system suitable for precision micromachining and nonlinear material processing research. The complete system must include a Ytterbium-doped femtosecond fiber laser, rack-mountable control unit, compact optical head, interconnecting fiber/umbilical cable (minimum 1.0 meter), all power supplies and control electronics, safety interlocks, cabling, and comprehensive user documentation. The system must meet stringent optical performance specifications including: center wavelength of 1030 nm ± 10 nm, pulse duration less than 500 fs, pulse energy greater than 40 µJ at approximately 500 kHz repetition rate, average output power exceeding 20 W, adjustable repetition rate from 50 kHz to 500 kHz with capability up to 2 MHz at reduced pulse energy, beam quality (M²) less than 1.4, and linear polarization with extinction ratio greater than 20 dB. The system must demonstrate stability and performance including long-term power stability less than 1% RMS over 8 hours, pulse-to-pulse stability less than 1% RMS, beam pointing stability less than 50 µrad, and warm-up time less than 15 minutes. Electrical interfaces must include universal single-phase AC input (100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz), remote control via RS-232, Ethernet, or USB, TTL input for on/off gating with bandwidth greater than 500 kHz, and analog or software control for power modulation. The system must be air-cooled or water-cooled and operate in standard laboratory environments (15–30 °C; 10–80% non-condensing humidity). Delivery shall occur to Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY with anticipated lead time of 12–14 weeks and maximum allowable delivery of 16 weeks. The vendor must provide a factory test report documenting autocorrelation trace, beam quality measurement, emission spectrum verification, and minimum 8-hour power stability data. All standalone devices must be NRTL certified and Class-4 laser compliant. Vendor qualification requirements mandate: commercially available production models only (no prototypes), prior successful delivery of at least three comparable femtosecond fiber laser systems with documentation and two customer references, NRTL certification with U.S. laser safety compliance, and demonstrated U.S.-based technical support capability including service location, response time, and warranty repair turnaround time. The system includes a minimum one-year warranty covering parts and labor, with the document signed on 03/03/2026.

Requisition No.: 0000475610

1. Objective

The vendor shall supply one (1) industrial-grade 1030 nm femtosecond fiber laser system suitable for precision micromachining and nonlinear material processing research at Brookhaven National

Laboratory (BNL).

2. Scope of Supply

The vendor shall provide a complete, fully integrated laser system including:

• One (1) Ytterbium (Yb)-doped femtosecond fiber laser (or equivalent industrial femtosecond platform) operating near 1030 nm

• Rack-mountable control unit

• Separate compact optical head

• Interconnecting fiber/umbilical cable (minimum 1.0 meter in length; longer length preferred)

• All required power supplies, control electronics, safety interlocks, and cabling

• User manual and system documentation

The system shall be fully assembled, factory tested, and ready for operation upon installation at BNL.

3. Technical Requirements

The laser system shall meet or exceed the following minimum performance requirements:

Optical Characteristics

• Center wavelength: 1030 nm ± 10 nm

• Pulse duration: < 500 fs

• Pulse energy: > 40 µJ at approximately 500 kHz repetition rate

• Average output power: > 20 W

• Repetition rate: Adjustable from 50 kHz to 500 kHz, with capability up to 2 MHz at reduced pulse energy

• Beam quality (M²): < 1.4

• Linear polarization with extinction ratio > 20 dB

• Free-space or collimated output suitable for integration into a micromachining station

Stability and Performance

• Long-term power stability: < 1% RMS over 8 hours

• Pulse-to-pulse stability: < 1% RMS

• Beam pointing stability: < 50 µrad

• Warm-up time: < 15 minutes from cold start to full specification
