About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details the procurement of two specialized microscopy components for scientific research: a Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) cooling Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) holder and a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) stage with high-frequency capabilities. The TEM holder (Item 1) requires simultaneous heating and biasing control at temperatures from -100 K to 800°C, double-tilt capability, compatibility with MEMS chips and 3mm TEM grids, and a removable LN2 dewar with at least 4 hours of operation time. The SEM stage (Item 2) must integrate RF cables for in situ biasing experiments, feature a flippable head stage for switching between SEM and TKD configurations, and use a compatible MEMS chip.

The deliverables are time-specific, with the LN2 cooling TEM holder to be completed 150 days after contract award and the SEM stage to be delivered 360 days after contract award. The solicitation is issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science under Solicitation Number RFQ_461513, seeking quotes for these advanced microscopy research instruments with specialized temperature, electrical, and frequency manipulation capabilities. The components are designed for precise scientific research requiring extremely controlled experimental conditions across varying temperatures and electrical states.

Statement of Work

Brief description of the items:

The TEM sample holder is used to mount thin research samples for insertion into the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The item to be purchased has special capabilities that allows apply electric bias to the thin TEM samples at variable temperatures from LN2 (~ 100 K) to 1000 K (or 800 oC). The item should have MEMS chip that allows heating without significant sample drift. Additionally, this purchase includes the co-development of an SEM stage for high-frequency excitation of samples.

Specifications:

Item1: Liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling TEM holder with electrical feedthroughs

-Simultaneous and precise heating and biasing control during cooling, with temperatures ranging from LN2 to 800°C.

-Double-tilt capability (range depends on pole-piece type).

-Compatibility with both MEMS chips and 3mm TEM grids.

-Removable, large liquid nitrogen dewar with at least 4 hours of operation time.

-Integrated heater and sensor inside the holder shaft for enhanced stability.

-Specialized MEMS chip design, including: 4-contact microheater for temperature stability in the mK regime, and capability to combine high E-field with 800°C without reaching breakdown voltage.

Item2: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) stage with high-frequency capabilities

-Integration of RF cables for high-frequency in situ biasing experiments with temperature-controlled heating.

-Flippable and removable head stage for switching between in situ SEM (sample facing up) and in situ TKD (sample facing down).

-Compatibility with the same MEMS chip for both the Lightning Arctic TEM holder and SEM stage.

Deliverables:

Item 1: Liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling TEM holder with electrical feedthroughs – 150 days after contract award.

Item 2: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) stage with high-frequency capabilities – 360 days after contract award.
