About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) requirements for a Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing system for small-scale R&D. The system specifications include a Ytterbium Fiber Laser Beam with variable power up to 2 kW, beam diameter between 80-250 µm, water-cooled optics, and adaptive beam control. Additional requirements specify a print area of 300-500 mm in XY dimensions, 250-500 mm Z height, minimum layer thickness of 20 µm, and a build plate heater capable of reaching 200°C.

The system must maintain an inert environment with oxygen levels below 50 ppm, have removable powder canisters, utilize electrostatic smoothing, and contain all subsystems within a single enclosure. Other key specifications include a footprint under 5m x 3m, weight less than 3000 kg, 400V-60Hz power, and delivery within 5 months. The seller is required to provide installation, on-site training, electrical certifications, NTRL certification, and an optional service contract. The SOW emphasizes the system's need for precise powder processing capabilities in a controlled environment for advanced additive manufacturing research.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion System

Statement of Work dated 1/6/2026

ORNL is looking to expand their capabilities in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L – PBF) additive manufacturing. The necessary system specifications are listed below. An adequate L – PBF system will allow for processing powder in an inert environment from loading powder to processing overflow powder and part removal. The system will allow for adaptive beam control and enable parameter control for part geometries. The system will also conform to space and weight requirements listed below.

Certain non-negotiable features as well as further stretch goals have been identified for the Small-Scale R&D L – PBF system. The required machine shall meet the following specifications:

Specifications:

Power Source: Ytterbium Fiber Laser Beam

Beam Power: Variable up to 2 kW

Beam Diameter minimum: 80 µm

Beam Diameter maximum: 250 µm

System shall have water cooled optics

System must have no more than a single laser

System must have adaptive beam control, indexable from gaussian to ring.

Minimum XY print area: 300 mm x 300 mm

Maximum XY print area: 500 mm x 500 mm

Minimum Z print height: 250 mm

Maximum Z print height: 500 mm

Minimum Layer Thickness: 20 µm

System must have a build plate heater capable of reaching 200 °C.

System must have a purge system capable of achieving an inert environment of max 50 ppm O2.

System must be capable of maintaining powder in an inert environment from entry to exit.

System powder canisters must be removable in an inert condition to allow for loading and sieving of overflow powder away from the system.

System must utilize electrostatic smoothing during powder deposition.

All sub systems (i.e, chiller, laser unit, optics module, powder containers, glove box compartment) must be contained within a single enclosure.

Build plate platform to have a positional accuracy of at least 20 µm.

System will have a footprint of less than 5 m x 3 m.

System will weigh less than 3000 kg.

System Power: 400 V – 60 Hz.

Delivery timeframe less than 5 months from PO placement.

Installation of the equipment will be performed by seller along with a site acceptance test to be determined by the seller.

Seller will supply any documentation on electrical certifications and electrical diagrams.

System will be NTRL certified

Seller will provide on-site training of the equipment.

Seller will supply option for service contract.
