About this file

This document is a geologic log for drill hole DH-18-301 located at the Shasta Dam in California. The drill hole was advanced to a total depth of 89.0 feet to determine the geotechnical and geologic properties of the embankment zones 2 and 3 for the dam.

The log provides detailed visual classifications and physical descriptions of the soil materials encountered, including the fill, embankment zone 2 from 0 to 10.2 feet, and embankment zone 3 from 5.3 to 89.0 feet. Key details include the percentage of sand, fines, and gravel/cobbles, as well as the plasticity, strength, and moisture content of the soils. The log also includes Standard Penetration Test (SPT) data, laboratory classification results, and notes on the drilling conditions and groundwater observations. No recovery was obtained from 0 to 2.5 feet and 77.5 to 89.0 feet.

PURPOSE OF HOLE:

To determine geotechnical and geologic properties of embankment zones 2 and 3.

LOCATION:

Left-wing dam, 22 feet upstream of the centerline of the concrete core wall (Sta. 8+94). In the grass area between two sidewalks.

DRILLED BY:

Bureau of Reclamation: PN Region drill crew:

Driller: Sam Thomas Helper: Taylor Graves

DRILL RIG:

Gus Pech 1300 C truck mounted rig (I472719)

DRILLING AND SAMPLING METHODS :

Drill hole was advanced using flight auger pilot bit (FAPB) and flight auger dry core (FADC) systems.

FAPB was initially used to advance the lead auger to a depth of 2.5 feet, which then allowed for FADC advancement and SPT. FAPB consisted of 6-1/4 inch i.d. by 10-1/4 inch o.d.

hollow flight augers equipped with an 10-1/2 inch o.d. lead drill bit containing six carbide bullet bit teeth around the rim, and a 6-1/4 inch o.d. pilot bit with six carbide bullet teeth set inside the lead drill bit. The pilot bit was attached to NWJ rods. FAPB does not allow for collection of core.

FADC was used to advance the drill hole and collect soil core from 2.5 to 77.5 feet. FADC utilizes the same augers as FAPB. Instead of using a pilot bit, FADC uses a 5-3/8 inch i.d.

by 6 inch o.d. by 5-foot-long split barrel dry coring system. NWJ rods were attached to a free spinning bearing assembly, which is attached to the FADC barrel. The bearing assembly allows for the FADC barrel to remain stationary while the augers rotate and advance the hole. The barrel's cutting shoe was even with the drill bit. A metal "basket" was used in the cutting shoe to assist with retention of core.

SPT was performed at 2.5 foot intervals (1-foot spacing between SPT intervals), unless otherwise noted. SPT consisted of a 1-3/8 inch i.d. by 2 inch o.d. by 2.0 foot long split spoon sampler driven 1.5 feet. Sampler was attached to NWJ rods that weigh about 57.5 lbs/10 ft. The sampler was advanced with an auto-hammer (140 pound weight with a 30 inch drop) at a rate of about 45 blows per minute (drill rig engine at about 700 rpm). The auto-hammer energy was measured on October 23, 2018, resulting in a 90.7% energy correction.

DRILLING CONDITIONS AND NOTES:

0.0 to 2.5 ft.: Fast, smooth advancement.

2.5 to 5.0 ft.: Some auger chatter due to gravel.

5.0 to 7.5 ft.: Driller noted harder drilling at about 6 feet.

7.5 to 10.0 ft.: Good cuttings return.

10.0 to 12.5 ft.: Smooth, moderate advancement, no chatter, minor steam from augers.

15.0 to 17.5 ft.: Augers steaming from heat (friction). Slow, steady advancement.

17.5 to 20.0 ft.: Driller noted softer material, easier advancement.

25.0 to 27.5 ft.: Driller indicated interval is "rocky."

27.5 to 30.0 ft.: Smooth advancement.

30.0 to 32.5 ft.: Augers steaming, rig bogging down a bit due to auger friction. Augers growling.

32.5 to 35.0 ft.: Minimal cuttings.

42.5 to 45.0 ft.: Slower drilling, increased heat/friction.

47.5 to 50.0 ft.: Slow drilling, harder, added about 1 gallon of water during drilling to soften and lubricate cuttings adhering to auger flights.

55.0 to 57.5 ft.: Harder drilling, dense, increase heat/friction.

62.5 to 65.0 ft.: Slower drilling and thin lifts of (GC)s (less than 4 inches).

67.0 ft.: Augers whining.

70.0 to 72.5 ft.: Slow drilling

72.5 to 77.5 ft.: Slow drilling, auger whining, pressure on augers is high. Partially pulled back/lifted auger in an attempt to clean cuttings from auger flights.

77.5 to 82.5 ft.: Pilot bit used due to refusal with FADC.

80.0 to 81.5 ft.: Unable to collect SPT sample, could not break rods. Rod joints were highly torqued/tightened during FAPB advancement.

82.5 to 87.5 ft.: Pilot bit used due to refusal with FADC.

DRILLING FLUID, RETURN, AND COLOR:

0.0 to 47.5 ft.: Drilled without water.

47.5 to 50.0 ft.: Added 1 gallon of water to soften and lubricate cuttings adhering to auger flights.

50.0 to 87.5 ft.: Drilled without water.

REASON FOR HOLE TERMINATION:

Drill hole terminated at 89.0 feet to avoid "Mass Concrete" shown on design drawings extending from the main dam and into the Left Wing Dam to dam axis Sta. 8+70 and at a depth of about 100 feet.

HOLE COMPLETION:

Hole was backfilled with grout comprised of Portland cement, 5% bentonite, and water.

GROUNDWATER LEVELS:

Groundwater was not encountered during drilling. Several wet zones were observed between 12.2 and 20.0 feet, which are noted in the visual classification log.

The following water levels were measured at the start of each day prior to drilling.

11/19/2018: DRY.

11/28/2018: DRY.

11/30/2018: 68.9 feet bgs (0.1 feet from bottom of hole, water likely from rain infiltration)

MISCELLANEOUS:

1 The source of embankment materials was from required as-excavated material during dam construction; therefore, gravel and cobble are comprised of weathered Copley Greenstone.

2 Embankment zoning below the top of the Left Wing Dam core wall (approximately 8 feet below existing ground) and within the excavation for the core wall appear to have been constructed in general accordance with Specification Drawing 214-D-777. Embankment materials placed above the core wall and beyond the excavation for the core wall appear to have been constructed with miscellaneous and similar material types consisting primarily of Clayey Gravel with Sand and Cobble, (GC)sc and to a lesser degree Clayey Sand with Gravel and Cobble, (SC)gc. Due to similar physical properties between miscellaneous embankment materials and Zones 2 and 5, as well as lateral and vertical variability in each of these materials/Zones, it is not feasible to differentiate miscellaneous embankment from zoned embankment. Therefore, it is conceivable that materials logged as Zones 2 and 5 in some of the test pits and upper portions of drill holes are in fact miscellaneous embankment.

* = Laboratory derived Plasticity Index and Liquid Limit values plot near/along the "A" Line on the Plasticity Chart; therefore, fine grained materials and/or fine grained fraction of coarse grained materials may have engineering properties of Lean Clay (CL) and Silt (ML).

B = A basket was used in the cutting shoe of the SPT sampler. Use of a basket results in a minor increase in resistance during sampler advancement, which results in slightly biased high blow count values.

SPT Gravel Interference: Significant gravel content was present in each SPT interval. Gravel is primarily comprised of Decomposed (W9) to Intensely Weathered (W7), very soft (H7) to moderately soft (H5) Copley Greenstone. Due to the "soft" nature of the gravel, SPT advancement over the full interval was possible. However, gravel was wedged in the sampler's cutting shoe for a majority of the test intervals, which resulted in reduced recovery and increased penetration resistance. Special consideration and/or a gravel correction factor(s) should be applied to field SPT blow count values.
