Sheet 3 of 10

LAYOUT AND BOUNDARY DESIGNATION:

Boundary line trees are to be marked at eye level with three (3) horizontal slash marks at least 3 inches wide placed at eye level and above, each band shall be placed 1.5 feet apart as well as a spot at ground level with the eye level and above marks facing into the interior of the Payment Unit, paint marks at eye level and above will be wrapped on sides of the tree with the tail of the mark facing the run of the line in both directions. When a road is the Boundary on portions of the Payment Unit, no paint will be required unless deemed necessary by the COR (shown on boundary map). On the boundary line map, portions of the boundary line shown as to be painted are subject to change (no additional boundary will be added).

Refer to the revised land management plan for guidelines on layout adjacent to streams and drainages. All stands will be flagged with pink flagging by the presale forester prior to the boundary being painted.

All boundary paint is to be Forest Service tracer Orange.

In all Leave Tree Mark units’ inoperable ground, hardwood inclusions and other areas where no cutting is to be done must be excluded from the Unit with Orange boundary paint.

Along other ownership boundaries use orange boundary marking paint to reinforce the property marking. Please take note if the boundary needs maintenance.

HERITAGE RESOURCES:

Approximate locations of heritage resources are shown on the work maps. In the field these boundaries are designated with two white painted bands on trees.

During layout paint a three stripe with stump mark using orange boundary tracer paint to exclude these areas from the sale unit. When the heritage site is on or near a boundary bring the unit boundary around the site – when the heritage site is within the unit completely encircling the site, check to ensure any unit behind these sites are accessible. All heritage concerns will be flagged by the presale forester.

Any questions concerning known or discovered heritage sites are to be brought to the attention of the COR.

SILVICULTURAL PRESCRIPTIONS AND MARKING

GUIDELINES:

The Silvicultural prescriptions for these stands are to create open, early succession, woodlands and regenerate mature pine stands. The leave trees are to be left evenly distributed throughout the stands. Residual basal area per acre should be 60-80 square feet of loblolly. The Unit Cross-Walk shows the tie from stands identified in the NEPA documents to the Payment Unit. The acres shown are the GPS determined acres after layout. The acres on the cutting cards and shown in tables in the NEPA document are map based estimates – differences are the result of field layout and GPS determination of Payment Unit boundary.

CRUISE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION:

Pre-Cruise data will be taken by forest service crews in the included sale compartments.

LEAVE TREE MARKING (DXP & Clearcut with Reserves):

• Leave trees will be banded using forest service tracer paint. The painted band shall be a placed high on the tree above growing vegetation in order to be seen by logging equipment.

• Stump marks shall be at ground level on the down hill side of the tree. Often there will be a build up of pine straw or other material which will need to be kicked out of the way to get to ground level. Stump marks are to be placed inside fluted portions of the stem; two spots at least three inches in diameter are required for sawtimber trees; one spot for pulpwood trees.

Leave Tree Selection Preference:

• Healthy shortleaf pines and mast producing trees 8 inches and larger in diameter will be selected as Leave Trees.

• All mast-producing trees with full healthy crowns and stem diameters greater than 8 inches shall be retained.

• Retain all healthy dominate and co-dominate shortleaf pine.

LTM CRUISE PLOTS:

(clearcut with Reserves)

The cruise design uses a point count measure tree variable plot system. Each plot will use a 20 BAF prism to determine the count trees. Data Recording: All trees sampled will be recorded in FS Cruiser on a handheld device.

The contractor shall monument each plot with a wire-staked flag. The flag will have the plot number recorded with permanent ink such as a “sharpie”, in addition to the wire-staked flag an attractor flag will be hung and the plot number along with the tree counts for each sample group and the initials of the cruiser who used the prism to determine in and out trees. In trees will have a number painted facing plot center.

Approximate locations of plots will be kept on a work progress map. All questionable or “border line” trees will be measured and checked against a limiting distance table to determine if the tree is to be considered in or out of the plot. Each measure tree will have a ribbon with the plot number, species, DBH, height, and markers initials.

Sheet 7 of 10

LTM CRUISE PLOTS:

Plots will be distributed on a systematic grid on north-south, east-west grid lines. If a plot is affected by the stand boundary perform the walk-through method.

Measure the distance between plot center and tree then measure the distance between tree and stand boundary in a straight line and if the tree is closer to the stand boundary double the count for that tree.

Measure Trees:

One tree of each product that is measured must be flagged. Write on the flagging with indelible marker:

• Marker’s initials

• Species

• Product

• DBH

• Merchantable height for sawtimber (FT1)

• 7” height for Pine sawtimber, 9” for hardwood Sawtimber (479 FT2)

• % Defect for sawtimber

• Tree number

Heights:

• All Pulpwood trees will be measured to total height.

• Hardwood Saw is to be measured to a 9inch top and then defected.

• Pine Saw is measured to a merchantable height as well as a 7 inch cutoff and then defected.

All healthy mast producers 8” and larger should be banded as leave trees.

Sheet 8 of 10

Designation by Prescription (DxP) Cruise Plots:

Data Recording: All trees sampled – count and measure – will be recorded in FS Cruiser on a handheld device.

Check for any sawtimber tree in the plot. Sawtimber for this cruise is any pine tree at or above 11.0 DBH. Sawtimber trees that are greater than 25.9” DBH are automatically tallied on the leave side of the tally sheet. Measure trees will be selected at random while entering the trees into the allegro data recorder. Measure sawtimber to a merchantiability height and then the 7’’ cutoff. On the measure tree put a ribbon with the tree species, diameter, height, plot number and your initials. Each tree will have a number painted facing the plot center with tree number 1 being the first tree entered into the data recorder, number the trees in the order in which they are tallied into the recorder. After all trees in the plot are found select the 3-4 best trees on the plot to designate as leave trees. (you may reach or exceed the leave BA with sawtimber greater than 25.9”). Depending on factors near or around the plot you may leave no less than 3 and no more than 4 leave trees on the plot unless there aren’t 3 trees on the plot or it is determined that any of the trees in the plot will be cut anyway; or there are sawtimber greater than 25.9”. All plots in the unit must average

3.5 trees per plot to achieve the desired 70 BA. A higher leave BA will be tolerated on plots where you must leave more due to DBH restrictions. All Southern Yellow pines between 4.6 dbh and 10.9 dbh will be tallied as pulpwood. Measure trees will be selected at random while entering the trees into the data recorder. When shooting height for this product measure total height. On the measure tree put a ribbon with the tree species, diameter, height, plot number and your initials.

If a plot is affected by the stand boundary perform the walk-through method.

Measure the distance between plot center and tree then measure the distance between tree and stand boundary in a straight line and if the tree is closer to the stand boundary double the count for that tree whether it be cut or leave.

Leave Trees:

All sawtimber pines (26 inches DBH and larger) are automatically leave trees.

Any tree whether it be pulpwood or sawtimber can be selected as a leave tree.

Merchantability:

All pines between 4.6 inches DBH and 25.9 inches DBH are merchantable.

Measure Trees:

Measures will be random on each of the following sample groups:

• PS: Pine Sawtimber cut, 11.0-25.9 DBH.

• SL: Pine Sawtimber Leave, 11” DBH and above.

• ZP: Pine Pulpwood cut, 4.6-10.9 DBH.

• ZL: Pine Pulpwood Leave, 4.6-10.9 DBH.
