Work Overview - Refer to Army Corps permit application for specifications and cross-sections.
Earthwork will be done in 2020 as weather conditions allow. This overview includes the final work overview and should be used if there are differences with the Army Corps permit application.
Overview
· No soil will be moved off site or brought to the site.
· All proposed features will be marked out with grade stakes and flagging in advance by USFWS.
· Track truck required
· Contractor supplies new 25 ft long, 36” corrugated plastic culvert
· Seed and mulch will need to be implemented as sections are completed (3-4 project areas)
· Contractor supplies 120 cubic yards of woody debris
Large Depressions (A-F) and adjacent hummocks
· Depressions would be excavated to a finished depth of 24 inches with 10 to 1 side slopes on all sides. Material from depressions to be used to construct adjacent hummocks. Total material for all depressions – 21,665 cubic yards. No stripping for hummocks or depressions. Hummocks – 2 ft tall with 5 to 1 side slopes. Excavators expected to be primary equipment used.
Culvert placement
· At the north entrance to the site, near plug 1, contractor will excavate through the field access drive and install a 25 ft long, 36 inch diameter, corrugated plastic culvert. Material will be replaced to allow vehicle field access over the culvert.
Ditch plugs and small depressions
· Topsoil, muck and vegetation would be scraped and piled from the 12 ditch plugs and 12 small depression locations – 170 cubic yards.
· A keyway would be dug perpendicular to the ditch for all ditch plugs.
· Subsoil from the small depressions would be used to construct the adjacent ditch plugs (5 to 1 side slopes, 672 cubic yards total for all plugs). Side slopes on small depressions – 5 to 1.
· Previously removed topsoil/sod/muck would be spread back over the ditch plugs -170 cubic yards
Spoil removal and berm construction
· Spoil material would be stripped of vegetation and then excavated back to the surrounding existing grade and moved to construct the berm. Track truck required. Transport distance approximately 500 ft to 1,250 ft. Berm location stripped before placement -0.34 acre. Berm side slopes would be 4 to 1. Material for the berm – 200 cubic yards. Stripped material reapplied – 150 cubic yards.
Ditch Fill and Spoils Removal
· Spoil piles pushed into adjacent ditches to fill the ditches. Approximately 955 cubic yards for all ditch fills.
Pit and Mound Area
· Twenty five pits would be excavated, each approximately 15 ft by 15 ft and 15 inches deep. Material from the pits would be placed on the adjacent ground to form 15 ft by 15 ft by 15 inches tall mounds. Side slopes 3.5 to 1. No stripping.
Woody Debris
· Contractor supplies 120 cubic yards of woody debris for this project. Woody debris in the form of logs, large branches, root wads, stumps and tops would be placed in the depressions and partially buried to secure from flooding with at least 50% in the form of 12 inch minimum diameter by 15 ft long logs. As part of this total amount, 15 logs would be erected upright in depressions to simulate dead trees (snags for wildlife) by pushing log into the ground with an excavator or other technique. No nonnative plant material allowed (buckthorn, honeysuckle, etc.).
Seed and Mulch
· As previously noted, contractor will seed and mulch as areas of the project are completed such as seeding and mulching all hummocks surrounding a large depression. Conservation mix and mulch hay is sufficient. Areas to be seeded and mulched: hummocks, ditch plugs, ditch fills, berm, spoil removal areas and mounds. Total area: 9 acres
· This project does not involve any tree planting
· No silt fencing required
