Despite a myriad of challenges, particularly having four different individuals, all with distinct styles of leadership, assume the position as division chief over the last four months of the fiscal year, the Interpretive team at APCO handled matters very effectively in FY18. The team was able to put on a full slate of special event offerings and interpretive and educational programs and continued a very successful arrangement with a local high school to provide interns to supplement park staff. Perhaps fortuitously, the overall visitation numbers of the park, along with many other NPS units in FY18, was significantly decreased, primarily due to poor weather which permitted the staff to complete time sensitive projects. However, it is hoped that with the arrival of a permanent person at the head of the division to provide a better sense of stability coupled with better weather, will have numbers return to their pre-FY18 levels.

FY19 was a transition year for the park as a new Chief of Education and Visitor Services and a new career seasonal onboarded. We had a highly successful 154th Surrender Anniversary program complemented by two other key programs in the summer. APCO celebrated the 200th birthday of the Clover Hill Tavern, the oldest building in the park and the first building in the community that became Appomattox Court House, with special programming. We played Civil War-style baseball, engaging fans of all ages, conducted interpretive programming focused on the Tavern's history, and held an afternoon participatory toast, in which visitors, staff, and volunteers shared historic toasts (found in an old newspaper article from a Tavern party past) and ate cupcakes provided by the Appomattox 1865 Foundation. Visitors could also take home a commemorative print run on a historic printing press in the Tavern, where printers made parole passes for Confederates to go home after the surrender. In September we hosted the annual Joel Sweeney and the Banjo Festival, with an added element: the dedication of a Virginia State Historical Marker to the unknown Black Banjoists who taught Joel Sweeney to play the banjo. More than 50 visitors attended the dedication along the banks of the Appomattox River and heard speeches by park Museum Technician and Banjo Historian David Wooldridge and music by award-winning musician Dom Flemons, a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Flemons also served as our headline performance for likely the largest-attended afternoon Sweeney Festival concert. We also spent approximately $5,000 on a Rec Fee funded Civil War to Civil Rights Teacher Workshop in partnership with the American Civil War Museum and Booker T. Washington NM for nine area teachers. While a small turnout, this was a highly successful workshop. APCO used $23,738 YPP funds for youth employment opportunities (4 positions) for our highly successful Appomattox Student Internship Program (ASIP) with the local high school and one living historian.

With almost all of the park's special events and formal interpretive programs cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic, our highlights this year are virtual. The park's social media offerings included special posts highlighting Black History Month, then ramped up to become our primary interpretive offering during our COVID-19 closure. During the closure, we shared strong interpretive posts nearly every day, and commemorated the 155th surrender anniversary through social media posts and videos. Overall, the park's Facebook increased by 3,000 over the year (23% increase). APCO also changed its in-park summer camp to an all virtual, interactive experience, with 10 sessions for a total of 35 attendees (adding together attendance for all sessions). The interpretive division is also managing a contract to update an outdated section of the visitor center's permanent exhibit. The park also hosted 3 interpretive and 1 living history youth hires through YPP funding and a successful partnership with our local high school (the Appomattox Student Internship Program).
