About this file
This document is a Project Manual containing construction specifications for a ramp addition project at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center Fisher House in Charleston, South Carolina. The project is owned by Fisher House Charleston with architectural services provided by Thomas and Denzinger Architects. The specifications cover multiple construction disciplines organized by CSI divisions, including temporary facilities and controls, demolition, metals, finishes, exterior improvements, and site work.
The construction specifications establish requirements for temporary site facilities (fencing, utilities, erosion control, security), selective demolition with careful protection of existing conditions, decorative metal railings fabricated to AWS standards, dimension bluestone flooring with specific finish requirements, exterior painting of galvanized metal using acrylic systems with semigloss topcoats (Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial specified as basis of design), site clearing and earth moving with specified soil compaction requirements, concrete work for sidewalks and site elements (3,000 psi compressive strength for sidewalks), and turf establishment using Bermudagrass sod with 30-day maintenance period. Key submittals required include mix designs for concrete, shop drawings for metal railings and stone flooring, paint samples for color verification, erosion control plans, and stormwater pollution prevention plans. All materials require manufacturer approval prior to ordering, with independent testing laboratory verification of concrete compressive strength and field grading. The specifications emphasize protection of existing vegetation and structures during construction, compliance with ACI standards for concrete, and adherence to erosion control requirements throughout the project duration.

2. Clearly mark units for reassembly and coordinated installation.
3. Use connections that maintain structural value of joined pieces.
B. Make up wire-rope assemblies in the shop to field-measured dimensions with fittings machine swaged.
1. Minimize amount of turnbuckle take-up used for dimensional adjustment so maximum amount is available for tensioning wire ropes.
2. Tag wire-rope assemblies and fittings to identify installation locations and orientations for coordinated installation.
C. Form decorative metal to required shapes and sizes, true to line and level with true curves and accurate angles and surfaces. Finish exposed surfaces to smooth, sharp, well-defined lines and arris.
