About this file
This is a technical narrative document describing the mechanical and electrical systems for converting an existing Saw Room into a controlled environmental conditioning chamber at the USFS Missoula Technical Development Center. The project involves replacing the current HVAC infrastructure with new dedicated systems to support precise temperature control capabilities.
The existing Saw Room is currently served by a VAV box with hydronic reheat coil shared with an adjacent storage room, a large-volume exhaust fan estimated at 2000 CFM with manual switch control, and one lab air outlet station. The new conditioning chamber will include a dedicated blower-coil unit with hydronic reheat coil connected to the existing building hot water system, independent outside air ventilation ducting to a roof-mounted gravity ventilator, an independently sized exhaust fan, and a thermostat capable of maintaining zone temperatures between 80°F and 110°F without humidity control capabilities. The existing VAV box duct diffuser will be demolished, the large exhaust fan will be capped and abandoned, and the Johnson Controls building automation system will be updated with new control graphics. For electrical infrastructure, a connected load of approximately 7-10 kVA (28A) is anticipated. New electrical service will be provided from the existing nearby 208Y/120V panel through one additional 208V 2-pole and two additional 120V 1-pole circuit breakers to supply the hydronic blower coil, exhaust fan, 208V treadmill receptacle, and miscellaneous convenience receptacles, with conduit rough-in for data connections included.

USFS Conditioning Chamber Narrative
Existing Mechanical Systems The existing Saw Room is one room of a multi-room zone served by a dedicated VAV box with hydronic reheat coil, the other room served by this same VAV box is an adjacent storage room. Current room numbers are not available. The controlling thermostat is believed to be located in the adjacent storage room.
The existing Saw Room is served by a dedicated large-volume exhaust fan. Original data on the exhaust fan is not available, but estimated airflow is 2000 CFM. The fan is manually controlled by a switch located adjacent to the entry/exit door.
The existing Saw Room includes one (1) lab air outlet station. The station includes an isolation valve, air pressure regulator, and 3/8” quick disconnect outlet.
The area of the building that includes the Saw Room is served by an HVAC system consisting of a variable volume air handling unit with multiple VAV boxes at multiple temperature control zones throughout the area. The temperature control system is a Johnson Control building automation system, with local thermostats control consisting of a warmer/cooler manual zone temperature adjustment, a 2” glycerine thermometer, a RJ-45 connection port, and an occupancy over-ride button.
New Mechanical System The new conditioning chamber may be served by a dedicated blower-coil with hydronic reheat coil, independent outside air ventilation duct to a roof-mounted gravity ventilator, independent exhaust fan sized to match the space demand, and a controlling thermostat capable of a zone temperature setpoint between 80°F and 110°F. The new conditioning chamber will not have humidity control or de-humidification function to maintain a setpoint for zone relative humidity. The blower-coil will include a hydronic reheat coil that is connected to the adjacent hydronic heating hot water system, and it is assumed that this location has adequate capacity to support the additional load.
The existing HVAC duct diffuser from the current VAV box is to be demolished from the room. The existing large-volume exhaust fan is to be capped at the roof penetration and abandoned in place.
The Johnson Control building automation system will be updated to include all control functions for the new conditioning chamber, including updated graphics at the DDC workstation.
USFS – Conditioning Chamber Narrative
Existing Electrical System The existing electrical service to the building consists of an overhead feed from pole-mount utility transformers to the south of the building. The existing service is 800A, 480Y/277V, 3-phase, 4-wire and feeds multiple panels/equipment. There is an existing 208Y/120V panel near the Saw Room that can be used.
New Electrical System The following items are to be installed. For this additional equipment, we calculate a connected load of around 7-10kVA, which equates to approximately 28A.
· Hydronic blower coil
· 208V treadmill receptacle
· Exhaust fan
· Miscellaneous convenience receptacles
· Conduit pathways for data connections rough-in New loads for the Conditioning Chamber will be fed out of the nearby 208Y/120V panel via (1) additional 208V/2P and (2) additional 120V/1P circuit breakers.
Other than the electrical items listed above, there are no major electrical upgrades assumed at this time.
