SECTION C

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

Work for this project consists of reconditioning a designated 2.0 miles of NFSR 7172 Imlay Sheep Mountain Road per Base Items (with Optional Items for additional designated reconditioning/aggregate placement) to a fourteen (14) foot wide roadway in preparation for furnishing, hauling, and placing specified aggregate base course as Shown on the Drawings and staked by the Government. Blade the placed aggregate to provide a smooth running surface with a centerline crown or as Shown on the Drawings. Reference (FP-14) Standard Specifications for Construction of Roads and Bridges and as Shown in the Specifications and Drawings.

Additional base item work includes:

1. At the drainage crossing, the roadway shall be shaped and specified riprap/rock/aggregate placed as Shown on the Drawings.

There are three (3) Option Items with work that may be completed depending

Prior to placement of the aggregate road base, the reconditioned roadway template shall be approved by the Government.

Prior to the installation of the corrugated HDPE culvert pipe (if awarded), the Contractor shall give the government 48 hours notice on installation date.

Prior to construction of the drainage crossings, the Contractor shall give the Government 48 hours notice on construction date.

Work to be completed shall be as shown in the Schedule of Items and described as follows:

Base Items:

-Recondition a designated 2.0 miles of roadway to provide for a fourteen (14) foot wide running surface as Shown on the Drawings. Compaction Method A.

-Design Quantity payment.

-Shape roadway and place specified Geotech material/riprap/rock/aggregate at drainage crossing at MP 5.68 as Shown on the Drawings and staked by the Government.

-Design Quantity payment.

-Deliver and place specified aggregate base course on a twelve (12) foot wide running surface, 4 inch compacted depth and 1 foot taper each side. This equates to approximately 1,680 cubic yards compacted in place. Compaction Method A.

-Design Quantity payment.

Option Items A:

-Recondition an additional 0.5 mile of designated roadway (per Option Item A) to provide for a fourteen (14) foot wide running surface. There is an approximately ¼ mile of reroute beginning near MP 3.72 included in this reconditioning, as staked by the Government. Compaction Method A.

-Design Quantity payment.

-Deliver and place specified base course on a twelve (12) foot wide running surface, 4 inch compacted depth and 1 foot taper each side. This equates to approximately 420 cubic yards compacted in place. Compaction Method A.

-Design Duantity payment.

Option Items B:

-Recondition an additional 0.25 mile of designated roadway (per Option Item B) to provide for a fourteen (14) foot wide running surface. Compaction Method A.

-Design Quantity payment.

-Deliver and place specified base course on a twelve (12) foot wide running surface, 4 inch compacted depth and 1 foot taper each side. This equates to approximately 210 cubic yards compacted in place. Compaction Method A.

Option Items C:

-Recondition an additional 0.25 mile of designated roadway (per Option Item) to provide for a fourteen (14) foot wide running surface. Compaction Method A.

-Shape roadway and place specified Geotech material/riprap/rock/aggregate at drainage crossing at MP 2.97 as Shown on the Drawings and staked by the Government.

-Deliver and place specified base course on a twelve (12) foot wide running surface, 4 inch compacted depth and 1 foot taper each side. This equates to approximately 210 cubic yards compacted in place. Compaction Method A.

-Design Duantity payment.

Option Items D:

- Remove an existing CMP near MP 5.87 and install a new 24 inch dia. by 30 foot long HDPE culvert pipe as staked by the Government.

-Lump Sum Quantity payment.

1.2 LOCATION

A. This project is located within the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands, Wall Ranger District. Beginning from Scenic, SD, travel east on State Hwy. 44 approximately 5 miles to NFSR 7172 on right. Begin project work on south side of cattle guard as staked by the Government.

1.3 GENERAL SITE CONDITIONS AND WEATHER

A. The elevation of the site is approximately 2,700 feet above mean sea level. The construction site experiences snowfall and cold temperatures with snow on the ground typically from mid- November through April. Summers tempertures average 90 degrees and are dry.

1.4 USE OF PREMISES

A. Contractor's use of premises for construction operations are limited only by the Government's right to perform work or to retain other contractors on other projects.

B. Contractor shall at all times conduct his operations to ensure the least inconvenience to the public and employees. Road closure may be permitted, when required, upon written approval by the Contracting Officer (CO).

C. Contractor shall provide adequate signing and barricades according to MUTCD and take necessary safety measures to protect the public during all construction operations. Contractor shall minimize disturbance of all undisturbed areas.

D. Existing Utilities: The Contractor is responsible for notifying all untility companies of proposed locations and times of excavation prior to starting work.

E. Contractor shall remove all equipment, trash, materials, and other items associated with the work within 7 calender days of final acceptance of work prior to final payment being processed by the CO.

1.5 MEALS AND LODGING

A. Meals and lodging are commercially available in the City of Rapid City or Wall within 45 minutes of the project site. Meals or lodging will not be available at Forest Service facilities.

1.6 CAMPING

A. With approval by the Wall District Ranger, National Forest Service lands may be used by the Contractor to have one fully contained recreation vehicle which may remain at this site for security.

1.7 CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE

A. Construction season may be as road conditions dictate.

B. Depending on conditions, normal fire restrictions may apply to activities associated with this project.

1.8 FIELD VERIFICATION

A. Field verification of the roadway condition shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.

Locations to turn-around haul vehicles must be approved by the Contracting Officers Representative (COR) prior to start of work.

1.9 PERMITS

A. Any permits for hauling as required by local, County, State, or Federal laws or regulations shall be obtained by the Contractor.

PART 2 – EXECUTION
