BOR PENSTOCK Invasives FY23 GMUG NATIONAL FOREST – Grand Valley Ranger District
Scope of Work
Description of Tasks
The work associated with this project involves the identification, treatment and mapping of existing weed populations along the specified areas of the along the BOR Penstock road and Webb Flats (Illustrated on the attached Maps). The areas include 12.5 miles of roadside invasives treatment up to 30 feet from each shoulder.
The following species have been identified in these areas: Scentless chamomile, Canada thistle, Oxeye daisy, Sulfur cinquefoil.
All work occurs on the Grand Valley Ranger District (Mesa County)
General Work Location
The project is located on the Grand Valley Ranger District of the GMUG National Forest, in the Northeastern portion of the Grand Mesa.
The project is located about 10.5 miles south of Collbran, Colorado.
There are four access points. Three of them are on graveled, all-weather roads and the fourth is a native surface. The Penstock itself (FS Rd #259) is unsurfaced, native material. When you get off paved County Rd #59 at the forest boundary the first 2.5 miles of FS Rd #121 is steep, and the gravel is gone in some areas so the road can be slippery and rutted when it gets wet.
Going south from Collbran the first access point is four miles inside the forest boundary, west off Forest Road #121 through the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) facility and across the dam on Bonham Reservoir onto FS Rd #259 which is the Penstock.
The second access is .3 miles farther south past the BOR facility at the intersection of FS Rd #121 and FS Rd #257, turn west onto FS Rd #257 and go four miles to Kitson Reservoir. This brings you to the southwest end of the Penstock system.
The third access point is back to the east from Kitson Reservoir .8 of a mile, at the intersection of FS Rd #257 and FS Rd #258 turn north onto #258 and go northwest 1.6 miles to the intersection with FS Rd #259.1D. Go north on 259.1D for 2.2 miles to the intersection with the Penstock, #259. There is no gravel on this road but when it’s dry it’s only rutted and rough.
The fourth access point is back on FS Rd #258. From the intersection of #258 and 259.1 continue west another .5 miles to the intersection of #258 and the Penstock.
The project is scattered patches along the Penstock road. The Penstock is open to full sized vehicles, UTVs and ATVs but there are several wet spots to cross on the northeast end. The whole route is rough but not necessarily 4-wheel drive. Total distance from Bonham Reservoir to Kitson Reservoir is 10.2 miles, plus the area along Webb Flatts which is 2.27 miles The total project length is 12.5 miles with a variable width of 20 to 50 feet.
There is usually water available at several points around the penstock Rd #259.
